"Welcome Back buffet"
The University Center Restaurant will hold a special “Welcome Back” buffet on Tuesday, Sept. 12 and Wednesday, Sept. 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Join colleagues and enjoy lunch on campus with a surf and turf theme that includes clam chowder (both Boston and Manhattan), grilled steak, fish and chips, pasta primavera, seafood pasta with bay shrimp, sautéed vegetables, salads, fruits, and assorted desserts. The cost is $11.95 per person (beverages additional). The University Center Restaurant is located at the west entrance to the University Union across from the Student Health Connection. Time to Apply for Sabbaticals
Full-time faculty members interested in applying for sabbatical or difference-in-pay leaves for the 2007-08 academic year must submit an application to Human Resources no later than 5 p.m., Friday, September 29, 2006. Application is done online, at www.csus.edu/hr/faculty/sabbatical/sabbatical.stm.

Law school forum
The Sacramento State Fall Law School Forum, featuring representatives from law schools from all over California and across the country, will be held on Monday, Sept. 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Sacramento State Alumni Center. The forum is free and open to all faculty, staff, students and the general public. The event uses an open house format with workshop presentations on how the law school admissions process works and how to prepare for the law school admissions test, the LSAT. The forum includes a question-and-answer session with a panel of law school admissions professionals such as deans and directors of admission. The event will give students an opportunity to learn more about the law school admissions process and meet law school representatives in person. For more information, call 278-6487.

Emergency preparedness
Risk Management Services will present its Emergency Preparedness Fair on Friday, Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the University Union Redwood Room. The fair will focus on personal emergency preparedness. Find out how to prepare for an emergency, whether at home, work or while traveling. The event is free. Service learning workshops
The Office of Community Collaboration will sponsor a brown bag workshop for faculty on getting started with service learning on Friday, Sept. 22 from noon to 1 p.m. in Library 4026. The workshop will focus on questions such as what is service learning, how can it be incorporated into the classroom, how to get students enthusiastic about service learning, how much work does it take to incorporate service learning into a syllabus and will service help in tenure and promotion. The workshop also will offer faculty members other tools to bring service learning into the classroom. Registration is not required. However, space is limited. Author on 1906 earthquake
Simon Winchester, author of the book “Crack in the Edge of the World: America and the Great California Earthquake of 1906" will speak and sign books at the Hornet Bookstore on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. Winchester’s book provides a blend of history and science on the 100th anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
