Student Spotlight

Manuel Rios, alumnus and graduate student and Xico Gonzales, alumnus, will have their art work on display at an international exhibition sponsored by Intersection for the Arts in San Francisco. The exhibit, “Terror? An Interdisciplinary Project", opens on Sept. 11.

Scholarship

Ed Brazo, Theatre and Dance, was elected to represent Western region members of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers on a committee titled "Professionals Working Within the Academic Environment".

Gale Justin, Philosophy, has a review of Terence Penner’s and Christopher Rowe’s Plato’s Lysis in the journal Ancient Philosophy.

Stephan Kroll, Economics, will have his co-authored paper "The Impact of Endowment Heterogeneity and Origin on Contributions in Best-Shot Public Good Games" published in the journal Experimental Economics.

Stephanie Tucker, English, had her paper, "A Diptych of Comedy and Carnival: Alan Ayckbourn's House & Garden" published in the New Theatre Quarterly, in May.

David Booher, Center for Collaborative Policy, presented a paper at the 50th annual conference of the International Society for Systems Sciences. "Complexity and Adaptive Policy Systems" was co-authored by Judith Innes of U.C. Berkeley.

In the News

Ron Coleman, Biological Sciences, was interviewed by KNX radio in Los Angeles about stingrays and the death of the "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin on Sept. 4.

Stephan Kroll, Economics, was interviewed on Aug. 30 by KCRA Channel 3 news on the economics behind the proposed cap-and-trade scheme to reduce California's greenhouse gas emissions.

Kathy Gee, Special Education, Rehabilitation and School Psychology, was featured in the April 14 Davis Enterprise for making a presentation to the Davis parent group SKIES (Special Kids in Educational Settings).

Anna Kruger, Music, was featured in the April 19 Rossmoor News for playing the viola in the Kirkwood String Trio in the final concert of the Rossmoor Chamber Music Society’s 35th season.

Frank LaPena, Ethnic Studies, was featured in a May 14 Sacramento Bee story about his exhibit at the b. sakata garo gallery.

Keith Bohm, Music, was featured in an April 17 article in the Davis Enterprise about his role in the “An Evening of Saxophone Chamber Music” event at the Mondavi Center.

Henry Chambers, History, was interviewed on KFBK radio on May 1 about the history of May Day.

Robert Fountain, Applied Research Center, was quoted in the April 27 San Diego Union Tribune and on KFBK radio about his report on the need for education spending to be stepped up in California to produce highly educated workers for the state.

Frank Garosi, History, was featured in a May 14 article in the Sacramento Bee regarding his “Predicting the Future” class.

Tim Hodson, Center for California Studies, was quoted: in the April 2 Los Angeles Times about the challenges of commemorating the 1906 San Francisco earthquake; in the April 27 Los Angeles Times about the gubernatorial primary election; and in the May 14 Sacramento Bee about the state’s $7.5 billion boost in tax revenue.

Ted Lascher, Public Policy and Administration, was quoted in the May 4 Sacramento Bee about the lack of competition in certain local primary elections.

Amy Liu, Sociology, was quoted in the May 5 Sacramento Bee about the survey she headed regarding a new arena for the Sacramento Kings.

Andrew Luchansky, Music, was featured in an April 11 article in the Davis Enterprise about his students’ performances in the Cello Festival in Davis.

Barbara O’Connor, Communication Studies, was quoted: in the April 9 Los Angeles Times, April 14 Stockton Record, April 16 Tri-Valley Herald and Alameda County Sunday Review, and April 23 Contra Costa Times, Alameda Sunday Valley Times and San Ramon Valley Times about the political ramifications of Gov. Schwarzenegger’s recognition of service members who die in the war in Iraq; in the April 29 San Francisco Chronicle about Gavin Newsom’s advancement in the Democratic ranks; in the April 22 Times Herald about the state’s prison guards union and its relationship with Gov. Schwarzenegger; in the May 1 Valley Times about the gubernatorial primary race; in the April 17 Woodland Hills Daily News about ballot designations; in the April 24 San Francisco Chronicle and the San Jose Mercury-News, and on May 2 on KXTV News 10 about Steve Westly’s and Phil Angelides’ TV spots in the weeks before the primary election; in the May 3 San Francisco Chronicle about the immigration issue in the governor’s race; and on Capital Public Radion on April 17 about the primary gubernatorial election.

Tony Platt, Social Work, had an article published in the April 9 Tri-Valley Herald titled “What Should be Done with Looted Artifacts?”

Harold Murai, Bilingual Multicultural Education, was featured in the “Wee Pals” comic strip on May 6 in the Oakland Tribune for his role as director of the Cross-cultural Resource Center.

John Syer, Government, was quoted on KCRA Channel 3 and KXTV News 10 on April 20 about Gov. Schwarzenegger’s difficulties with federal flood help, and on KXTV News 10 on April 22 about President Bush’s visit to West Sacramento.

Rob Wassmer, Public Policy and Administration, was quoted in the May 16 Sacramento Bee about urban limit lines and how they can affect the price of land.

Robert Waste, Public Policy and Administration, was quoted in the May 6 Sacramento Bee about Darrell Steinberg’s role in negotiating an arena financing deal with the city and county of Sacramento.
