Caliente
lineup for Hispanic Heritage Month
The
events for Hispanic Heritage Month at Sacramento State are
hotter than ever with the campus premiere of the play S-E-X-Oh!,
a performance from Latino rock band Molotov and a screening
of the acclaimed documentary El Corrido de Cecilia Rios.
Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated on campus this year from
Sept. 12 through Oct. 19, honors the cultures and traditions
of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Latin America
and the Caribbean.
The
screenings of the movies El Corrido de Cecilia Rios
and A Girl’s Life kick off the month, with
a scheduled talk by film directors Kristy Guevara-Flanagan
and Dawn Valadez. El Corrido documents the events
surrounding the murder of a 15-year-old girl in a California
school, and shows her classmates’ efforts to cope with
her death and speak about the problems of violence. A
Girl’s Life, which chronicles the lives of four
preteen girls from different cultural and economic backgrounds,
immediately follows. The films start at noon, Monday, Sept.
12 in the University Union Hinde Auditorium.
The
film Escuela, a documentary on a 13-year-old migrant
girl’s efforts to get an education, will be shown at
noon, Sept. 15 in Library 1010.
Topics
ranging from the serious to the silly are tackled within the
play S-E-X-Oh!, brought to Sacramento by the Latina
theatre company Teatro Luna and La Raza Galeria Posada. The
play explores the relationship between gender, sex and culture
through the eyes of Latinas while exposing stereotypes surrounding
Latina sexuality. The play shows at 8 p.m., Thursday, Sept.
15 in the Music Recital Hall in Capistrano Hall. Tickets are
$15 general and $10 for students.
Music
spices up the month as Mexican rap-metal group Molotov—with
pop-rock band Los Abandoned—will perform on campus at
7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2 in the University Union Ballroom.
The band’s music has sparked controversy in Mexico for
its outspoken views about politicians, television hosts, media,
U.S.-Mexico border problems and anti-war views. Tickets are
$20 general and $15 for students.
The Los
Kung Fu Monkeys, an eight-piece punk and ska band from Tijuana,
will perform at noon, Wednesday, Oct. 19 at Serna Plaza.
