Writing
workshop
The Writing Across the Curriculum program is offering a campuswide
workshop on "Time-Saving Techniques for Responding to
Student Writing" from noon to 1:15 p.m., Wednesday, Sept.
21 in the University Union Foothill Suite. The workshop will
cover such topics as using rubrics, portfolio response, the
“minimal marking” technique for grammar and punctuation,
lightening the paperload through low-stakes writing assignments,
and how to use a “less is more” approach to responding.
The workshop is open to all full- and part-time faculty and
teaching assistants.

Bookstore
celebration
The Hornet Bookstore will hold a celebration of the new school
year and the new partnership with Follett Higher Education
Group on Thursday, Sept. 29. It begins with a ribbon-cutting
ceremony at 10 a.m. followed by giveaways, refreshments, special
discounts and prize drawings.

Workshop
for young journalists
Topics of interest to future journalism students, advisers
and parents will be the focus of the free Capital Journalism
Day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 8 in Mendocino Hall.
Newspaper advisers and working journalists from the Sacramento
area will lead sessions on covering controversial stories,
working with printers, writing headlines and cutlines, legal
issues confronting student journalists, preparing for college,
photography, layout and design, and advertising and marketing.
There will also be an adviser roundtable and a session on
internships.
Capital Journalism Day is open to middle school and high school
students, advisers and parents. It is sponsored by the Communication
Studies Department, the California Newspaper Publishers Association,
the Journalism Education Association of Northern California
and J-Ideas, a journalism education institute at Ball State
University in Indiana.

management workshops for students
Time management/study skills workshops for students have been
scheduled for fall 2005. The same workshop is offered each
week but at different times to give students a variety of
times to attend.
