Thought-provoking topics tackled in film screenings

Sacramento State’s Women’s Resource Center is presenting its fall 2007 Noon Movies series beginning Thursday, Sept. 27 and continuing through Tuesday. Nov. 27. The screenings will be held at noon in the Women’s Resource Center/Multicultural Center in Library 1010.

This fall’s movies focus on the challenges women and men face in society today and in the past. Movies are free and free popcorn will be provided. Discussions will follow each of the movies.

The first screening begins with the documentary “Wrestling With Manhood,” an examination of the professional wrestling industry and its negative impacts on American culture. Among the issues tackled in the movie are powerful images of violence and degradation and how they are marketed as entertainment.

The thoughts and feelings of African American men and women from more than 15 cities across America will be shown in “I Am a Man: Black Masculinity in America,” on Monday, Oct. 22. The documentary links black men from various socio-economic backgrounds with some of black America’s most progressive academics, social critics and authors to provide a candid dialogue on black masculine identity in America.

The series concludes with the film “Tough Guise,” an in-depth look at the relationship between pop-cultural imagery and the social construction of masculine identities in the U.S. in the beginning of the 21st century. The documentary focuses on widespread violence in American society and its impact on masculinity.
