Scholarship

Jim Chopyak, Music, presented, “Globalization, Westernization and Islamic Influence in Music in Malaysia,” at the Music in the World of Islam conference in Assilah, Morocco, in August. Chopyak also presented, “Teaching Malaysian Music in the United States: Breaking Stereotypes” at the College Music Society International Conference in Bangkok, Thailand in July.

Helen Roland, Environmental Science, has been appointed to the editorial board of Human Ecology Review, the official journal of the Society for Human Ecology, an international interdisciplinary professional society that promotes the use of an ecological perspective in both research and application.

Jim Hernandez, Criminal Justice, was an invited presenter on Asian gangs at the 2007 Summit on Gang Violence in Alexandria, VA, in May, Hernandez also gave a presentation of the current state of Asian gang activities to prosecutors at Thammasat University in Bangkok.  

Louis Downs, Counselor Education, traveled over the summer on a Fulbright Fellowship as a consultant for the faculty and staff of the Department of Guidance and Counseling Psychology of Kolej New Era in Kajang, Malaysia.  As a consultant, Downs helped the college develop a policy and procedures for disaster relief, rewriting the counselor education curriculum, training counseling faculty in supervision and counseling skills acquisition for students, providing continuing education for counselors in the community, and developing counselor training materials. Downs has also been appointed as the curriculum adviser for the Department of Guidance and Counseling Psychology for the next two years by the Principal of Kolej New Era.

Amy Liu, Sociology, was interviewed on Capital Public Radio on Aug. 13 about a new poll regarding health care reform.

Ann Stoltz, Nursing, was quoted Aug. 1 in the Sacramento Bee about the effects of a new nursing school in the region.

Barbara O’Connor, Communication Studies, was quoted: Aug. 5 in the Sacramento Bee about PR Executive Jeannie Runyon; on July 19 in the Hayward Daily Review, Alameda Times Star and Pinole West County Times about politicians’ search for multimedia solutions; on July 7 in the Santa Rosa Press Democrat about concerns and rights of people who fly; and on July 7 in the Oroville Mercury-Register about the governor being served a subpoena.

Richard Cionco, Music, was quoted Aug. 12 in the Sacramento Bee about the Suzuki method of teaching piano.

Sheila Macias, Community Engagement Center, was quoted on July 27 in the Solano Co. Tribune about girls’ involvement in math and sciences.

Anthony Sheppard, Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration, was featured Aug. 2 in Sacramento’s Pocket News about his involvement with the Sacramento Film and Music Festival; and quoted in the August edition of Sacramento Magazine about parent’s need for party planners in children’s birthdays.

Tim Hodson, Center for California Studies, was quoted June 28 in the San Gabriel Valley’s Daily Tribune about state concerns released in a poll; on June 3 in the San Gabriel Valley’s Daily Tribune about Republicans’ involvement in negotiating the state budget; on July 26 in the Fresno Bee about politician Jeff Denham’s decisions and their influence on his 2010 campaign; and on July 26 in the Contra Costa Times, Oakland Tribune and San Jose Mercury-News about Californians blaming Gov. Schwarzenegger’s lack of green progress.

Nancy Shulock, Institute for Higher Education Leadership and Policy, was quoted July 16 in the Long Beach Press Telegram, Napa Valley Register, and Davis Enterprise about the ability of California’s higher education to graduate students; featured on July 19 in the Porterville Recorder for her study on students who succeed at completing higher education within six years; and on Aug. 1 in the Santa Rosa Press Democrat about the need for public schools to educate the Latino population.

Jaime Alvayay, Business Administration, was quoted July 28 in the Lodi News-Sentinel about creative deals in the slumping housing market.

Ayad al-Qazzaz, Sociology, was quoted and featured on Aug. 5 in the San Francisco Sunday Chronicle on his life in America and the presence of Iraqi Americans in the Bay Area.

Lynn Wilcox, Counselor Education, was quoted Aug. 7 in the Contra Costa Times about the construction of a church that practices Sufism.
