Student Spotlight

Henry Lyle, Anthropology graduate student, delivered a speech at the Human Behavior and Evolution Society Annual Conference in Philadelphia, in June 2006. His paper was titled "Risk-taking and Competitive Status Signalling in P2P File-Sharing Networks." The paper was co-authored with his supervisor, Roger Sullivan.

Scholarship

Craig Gallet, Economics, and Hyrum Doegey (recent M.A. graduate in Economics) had their paper entitled "The Impact of Smoking Bans on Alcohol Demand" accepted for publication in the Social Science Journal.

Doug Rice, English, has just published an entry on the life and work of Kathy Acker in the Encyclopedia of Erotic Literature published by Routledge Press.

Mark L. Emerson, Art, is among several artists whose work is included in an exhibition at the Old Sugar Mill in Clarksburg from Sept. 28-Nov. 11, artists' reception, 6-8 p.m. on Sept. 28. Also represented in the show, which is sponsored by JayJay Gallery, is Emeritus Art Professor Joan Moment.

Smile Dube, Art, presented a paper, "The AK 90 Model In The Tropics: Time-Series Evidence From South Africa," at Stellenbosch University, South Africa on July 17. The paper had been scheduled for the third African Journal Finance Conference in Accra but had to be presented in Cape Town instead following an abrupt cancellation of the flight from Johanneburg to Accra.

Robert Brady, Art, has a sculpture currently on view at the Fresno Art Museum: Sculpture 1989-2005. The exhibit is open through Nov. 19.

Robert Ortbal, Art, has a recent work on view at the Cabrillo Gallery at Cabrillo College in Aptos, CA. Oxygen's Shadow will be on exhibit from Sept. 29-Nov. 3. He will give an artist talk at the Cabrillo Gallery on Sept. 28.

Rachel Clarke, Brenda Louie and Marcelle Wiggins, Art, are among the 25 regional women artists whose studios will be featured in a day of tours on Saturday, Sept. 30. "Celebrating Our Working Women Artists" is co-sponsored by the Center for Contemporary Art, Sacramento and the California Museum for History, Women, and the Arts. Also included in the tour are the studios of Sacramento State art students Shirley Hazlett and Liv Moe. For further information: http://www.ccasac.org

Sue Anne Foster and Brenda Louie, Art, are among the artists whose work is featured in the debut exhibition of the new City Hall Gallery in Sacramento. Also represented in the New City Hall's public art collection are several Sacramento State alumni.

Suzanne Green, associate vice president for Finance, received the NACUBO 2006 award for professional development in July. NACUBO is the National Association for College and University Business Officers. The national award recognizes college and university business professionals for notable contributions to NACUBO’s professional development program.

Bill Leach, Center for Collaborative Policy, has published an article "Collaborative Public Management and Democracy: Evidence from Western Watershed Partnerships" which will appear in Public Administration Review, in December.

Rachel Clarke, Art, has a show at the Center for Contemporary Art, Sacramento, titled, "The Present Moment". The show runs through Oct. 29.

Mary Mackey, English, had her short story "Third Initiation: A Gift From the Land of Dreams" published in the anthology Paraspheres: Extending Beyond the Spheres of Literary and Genre Fiction gave a lecture to the San Francisco Town and Country Club entitled "'The Time Traveler's Wife Time’” Travel as Metaphor in Contemporary Fiction" on Sept. 14; read her poetry at a benefit for the Oakland Public Library on Sept. 16; read some her short fiction at Diesel Books in Oakland on Sept. 17; participated in a panel at the Book Group Expo in San Jose, spoke on the subject "Authors Who Write Both Poetry and Fiction"; read her poetry at Anna's Jazz Cafe in Berkeley as part of a benefit to raise money for disabled people who had become homeless due to Hurricane Katrina on June 25; read her poetry as part of the Sacramento Poetry Marathon on July 30; taught screen writing at the Sacramento State Writers' Conference and did a public reading of her recent poetry on Aug. 19 and 20.

Tom Decker, Art, was featured in the May 18 Davis Enterprise about his ceramic sculptures on display in an art exhibit in Davis.

James Sobredo, Ethnic Studies, was quoted in the May 16 Stockton Record about the Daguhoy Museum in Stockton.

Doug Bell, Biological Sciences, was quoted in the May 30 San Jose Mercury News, San Ramon Valley Times and Contra Costa Times about vegetation levels and how they may help wind energy become environmentally acceptable.

Kevin Wehr, Sociology, was quoted in the Santa Cruz Sentinel on June 2 about using the Internet to keep up with old acquaintances and in the May 18 Sacramento News & Review about Sacramento’s ranking in a study that measures a city’s preparedness for an oil crisis.

Tim Hodson, Center for California Studies, was quoted: in the June 7 San Francisco Chronicle about the contest for the Democratic nomination for California’s lieutenant governor; on Capital Public Radio on May 5 about the infrastructure bond approved by the California Legislature; on KQCA Channel 58 on June 5 about last-minute gubernatorial campaigning; and on KCRA Channel 3 on June 6 about the primary election.

Michael Semler, Government, was quoted in the May 31 San Francisco Chronicle about Angelo Tsakopoulos’ donations to Phil Angelides’ campaign for governor.

Barbara O’Connor, Communication Studies, was quoted: in the May 27 San Francisco Chronicle, the June 1 San Jose Mercury-News and Contra Costa Times and the June 2 Pleasanton Valley Times about negative television ads in the primary race for governor of California; in the May 22 Hayward Daily Review about the challenges Gov. Schwarzenegger’s opponents face in light of California’s budget surplus; in the May 28 San Francisco Chronicle and the June 1 San Francisco Examiner about undecided Democratic voters in the primary gubernatorial race; in the May 11 San Ramon Valley Times about the role the state controller plays; in the June 3 Pleasanton Valley Times, Contra Costa Times and San Jose Mercury-News about Proposition 82; in the June 4 Sacramento Bee about the possibility of campaign contribution limits in Placer County elections; and in the June 3 Sacramento Bee about the Service Employees International Union. Robert Mogull, Business Administration, was featured in a May 25 article in the Land Park News about his study on poverty rates among ethnicities within the Hispanic American community.

Suzanne O’Keefe, Economics, was quoted in the May 4 Pocket News about Sacramento’s ranking in a prosperity study.

Timothy Capron, Criminal Justice, was quoted in the June 13 Sacramento Bee about studying crime trends in the correct context.

Amy Liu, Sociology, was interviewed on KCRA Channel 3 and Capital Public Radio on May 5 about her poll of Sacramento residents and how they feel about a new Kings arena.

Robert Fountain, Applied Research Center, was quoted on Capital Public Radio radio on May 11 and 12 regarding a study on the future of education and jobs.

Robert Waste, Public Policy and Administration, was interviewed on KCRA Channel 3 and KQCA Channel 58 on May 29 and June 1 for a political campaign ad watch.

Kimberly Nalder, Government, was interviewed on Capital Public Radio on May 30 about undecided Democratic voters.

Ted Lascher, Public Policy and Administration, was interviewed on Capital Public Radio on June 5 about the role of California’s governor.

John Syer, Government, was interviewed on KXTV News 10 on June 5 about politicians’ reasons for not wanting to talk with the press.

Sanjay Varsheny, College of Business Administration, was quoted in the June 2006 prospermag.com about how Sacramento’s job market competes nationally.
