Scholarship

Sue Anne Foster, Art, was awarded first place in sculpture by judge Gregory Kondos at this year’s KVIE Art Auction competition. The sculpture, "Bursting Forth," is a cast aluminum piece with mixed media. It also received Best of Show in the NCA Northern California Art Annual Spring Show at the Sacramento Fine Arts Center. It will be auctioned on live television on Saturday, Oct. 1 between 6 and 6:30 p.m. The KVIE Preview event will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept 28. Tickets for the preview are available at www.kvie.org.

Patricia L. Roberts and Richard D. Kellough, both Education Emeritus, and Kay Moore, Teacher Education, have published A Resource Guide for Elementary School Teaching: Planning for Competence (6th Edition) with Pearson/Merrill/Prentice Hall.

Amy Liu, Sociology, was featured in a June 4 Sacramento Bee article, a June 3 NPR story and June 3 and 4 on KFBK radio about her “Quality of Life” survey regarding the views of local residents on the governor. The June 18 and June 20 Sacramento Bee also had stories regarding her study of the region.

Hazel Mahone, Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, was quoted in a June 9 Sacramento Bee article about elementary school kids’ participation in Sacramento State’s College Prep Math Academy.

Eva Gabbe, Career Center, was interviewed June 6 on KXTV Channel 10 about the rise in jobs for new graduates.

Sanjay Varshney, College of Business Administration, was quoted in a June 11 Sacramento Bee article on the effectiveness of graduate program case studies.

David Jelinek, Teacher Education, was quoted in a June 2 Sacramento Bee article about a study he conducted on a Davis School District gifted education program.

Jim Hernandez, Criminal Justice, was interviewed on June 6 for a Sacramento Bee article on gangs in public schools.

Jeff Lustig, Government, was quoted June 14 in a Sacramento Bee article regarding a potential union boycott.

Barbara O’Conner, Communication Studies, was quoted in: a May 2 Delta Timea article on the governor’s “Live Within Our Means”; May 21 stories in the Times Herald, San Mateo Daily Journal, Fairfield Daily Republic, San Bernardino Times, Red Bluff News, Pinole Sunday Times and Woodland Daily News on school funding and the budget; a May 22 San Ramon Valley Times article on celebrity politicians; a June 4 Sacramento Bee article about long-kept secrets; and in a June 10 KXTV Channel 10 story and a June 11 Sacramento Bee article regarding the upcoming special election.

Kathleen Raske, Intercollegiate Athletics, was quoted in a June 3 Sacramento Bee article about the increased interest in the sport of pole vaulting in the area.

Robert Waste, Public Policy and Administration, was interviewed May 16 in a Tracy Press article regarding his role in a new regional development plan.

Nancy Shulock, Public Policy and Administration, was quoted for June 23 stories in the Fresno Bee and Oakland Tribune on her study regarding financing higher education.
