Scholarship

Monica Freeman, Global Education, was elected international president-elect of Phi Beta Delta, the honor society for international scholars. Freeman is also the chapter coordinator of the university's Omicron Chapter, one of the founding chapters of the Honor Society. She previously served on the Phi Beta Delta Board of Directors as senior international vice president and received the Edward Blankenship Outstanding Staff Award. 

Catherine Turrill, Art, is participating in the 2007-08 Kingsley Art Club Lecture Series. Turrill’s lecture, titled "Bankers, Heroes, and Gods: The Medici as Art Patrons in Florence, 1450-1650," will be held at the Shepard Garden and Arts Center in McKinley Park at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 17.

Mark Emerson, Art, has a show of "New Works on Paper" in the Annex of JayJay Gallery, 5520 Elvas Avenue, Sacramento, running Sept. 5 through Oct. 20. Emerson's work also is featured on the poster for this year's Festival of New American Music at Sacramento State.

Roger Sullivan, Anthropology, co-wrote an article that appeared in the July issue of the journal Evolutionary Psychology. Sullivan has also been appointed assistant adjunct professor of psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, UC Davis School of Medicine, where he will contribute to the Schizophrenia Research and Education Program.

Pat Chirapravati and Elaine O'Brien, Art, are scheduled lecturers for the second annual Art After Noon series in the University Library Art Gallery at Sacramento State. O'Brien's lecture, "Between Japan and France," will be Oct. 10; Chirapravati will be giving two lectures on "The Art of Zen" on Nov. 8 and 15, and leading a day trip to the Asian Art Museum on Nov. 1.

Scott Parady, Art, has an exhibit "Recently Pinched Pots" at the Trax Ceramics Gallery in Berkeley, CA, Sept. 15-Oct. 10.

David Wetzl, Art, has a show of recent paintings, "Morphing Mind Tiers," at the University Art Gallery, College of the Arts, CSU Stanislaus, Oct. 17 through Nov. 21; reception on Oct. 17 at 6:30 with an artist talk at 7 p.m.

Chris Taylor, Astronomy and Physics, was quoted on Aug. 29 in the Sacramento Bee about the value of a planetarium on campus.

Jill Trainer, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, was quoted on Aug. 29 in the Sacramento Bee about funds raised for the Sacramento State planetarium.

Melinda Wilson, Theatre and Dance, was quoted on Aug. 24 in the Sacramento Union about the California Music Theater bringing a playwright to Sacramento State and holding a playwright workshop for theater majors.

Mary Mackey, English, was a featured speaker on Aug. 22 for Capital Public Radio about her latest book, The Notorious Mrs. Winston.

Roger Sullivan, Anthropology, was interviewed about his research for a news article in the July issue of Science News.

Barbara O’Connor, Communication Studies, was featured on a panel of speakers on Aug. 28 for KCRA radio on the topic of a bill Gov. Schwarzenegger will be receiving regarding California voters and the Iraq war resolution; on Aug. 18 for the San Francisco Chronicle, Fresno Bee, Monterey Co. Herald and Pasadena Star News about new chairwoman of the California Air Resources Board, Mary Nichols’, energy stock investments; on Aug. 22 in San Jose’s Mercury - News about Hillary Clinton’s candidacy for president; on Aug. 26 in the Sacramento Bee about Sacramento County Supervisor, Roger Dickinson; on July 16 in Lodi’s News - Sentinel and Bakersfield’s Californian about Gov. Schwarzenegger’s focus at the Capitol; on July 27 in the Orange County Register about media posting incorrect information on the internet; and on Aug. 9 in the Los Angeles Times and Santa Rosa’s Press Democrat about the effects of California’s budget delay.

Emir Macari, Engineering and Computer Science, was quoted on Aug. 24 in the Sacramento Bee about the importance of spreading the message that engineering is for everybody.

Tim Horner, Geology, was quoted on Aug. 5 in Dixon’s Tribune, Rancho Cordova’s Grapevine Independent and the Sacramento Union on the spawning habits of steelhead trout and repair work being done to preserve their spawning habitat. 

Kevin Wehr, Sociology, was quoted on Aug. 17 in the Sacramento Bee about the difficulties of meeting people, in regard to those looking to date.

James Cox, Government, was quoted on July 26 in the Sacramento News and Review about budget earmarks.
