Recognition
The
Procurement Department received the 10th
annual “Achievement of Excellence in Procurement”
award for 2005 from the National Purchasing Institute. The
award recognizes organizations that demonstrate excellence
in procurement through a variety of criteria including innovation,
professionalism, e-procurement, productivity and leadership
attributes of the procurement function.
Alice
H. Choi, Criminal Justice, is the president of the
board of directors of Asian Pacific Community Counseling,
a non-profit community-based organization with a mission to
promote mental health in Asian Pacific Islander communities
through culturally and linguistically relevant outreach, prevention,
education and counseling.
Scholarship
Celeste
Roseberry-McKibbin, Speech Pathology and Audiology,
and colleagues presented several papers at the annual convention
of the California Speech and Hearing Association in Santa
Clara in April: “The Influence of Poverty and Maternal
Education on Children’s Language,” “The
Professor-student Connection: Expanding Beyond the Classroom,”
“Increasing Written Language Skills in Children with
Fine Motor Problems” and “A Survey of Ethnic Pashtuns
from Afghanistan and Pakistan.” She and colleagues also
presented “Implementing a Residency Program to Improve
Nursing Retention” at the 16th International Nursing
Research Congress in Kona, Hawaii in July.
Cherryl
Smith, English, has published a book of poetry, After
Being Somewhere Else, from Regent Press. She will read
from her book at the Sacramento Poetry Center, at 7:30 p.m.
on Oct. 10.
David
J. Leon, The Serna Center and Ethnic Studies, delivered
a presentation on the rising Latino population in California
to McDonald's employees at the Northern California headquarters
in San Ramon for Hispanic Heritage Month.

discussing the governor and the upcoming special election.
Barbara
O’Connor, Communications, was quoted in: a
June 19 San Jose Mercury News article regarding
Democratic candidates for governor; June 22 and June 23 San
Francisco Chronicle articles regarding public support
of the upcoming special election and initiatives; and a June
26 Sacramento Bee article regarding fabrications
in print journalism and the lack of trust it produces for
the media.

Hodson, Center for California Studies, had an article
published in the June 24 San Francisco Chronicle
regarding redistricting reform in California.
Rob
Wassmer, Public Policy and Administration, was quoted
in June 21 San Francisco Chronicle and June 22 Fairfield
Republic and Stockton Record articles discussing
state worker salaries.
Sanjay
Varshney, College of Business, was quoted in a June
20 Sacramento Bee article about the market cost of
homes in the region and was profiled in a July 1 issue of
the Sacramento Business Journal.
David
Rolloff, Recreation and Leisure Studies, was featured
in a June 24 Sacramento Bee article about how he
integrates the American River into his daily life.

Wooster, Economics, was quoted in a June 29 Sacramento
Bee article regarding trade between the United States
and China.
Nancy
Shulock, Higher Education Leadership and Policy,
was quoted in a June 21 Contra Costa Times article
about fewer senior citizens attending community colleges due
to a cutback in non-academic courses.
Ric
Brown, Academic Affairs, was interviewed for a July
15 Sacramento Bee article about a new partnership
with Sierra College that was developed to ensure an easier
transition to Sacramento State.
Joseph
Sheley, Social Science and Interdisciplinary Studies,
was interviewed in a July 1 Sacramento Business Journal
article regarding his work on the Sacramento State Placer
Campus.
