Former United States Senator Bob Graham
Former Florida Governor and United States Senator Bob Graham will speak on campus at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, in the University Union’s Hinde Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
Graham will discuss how universities can help to empower new generations of successful citizens and how students can positively change their communities through effective interaction with government.
His latest book, America, the Owner’s Manual: Making Government Work for You, explains how people can influence public policy decisions at the local, state and federal levels. After his speech, Graham will sign copies of his book.
Graham spent 12 years in the Florida legislature and served two terms as Florida’s governor. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986 and served three terms. He was chairman on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and co-chaired the Joint Inquiry into Intelligence Community Activities Before and After the Terrorist Attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
After retiring from public office in early 2005, Graham spent the 2005 academic year as a senior fellow at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. His legacy continues through the newly formed Graham Center for Public Service at the University of Florida and the University of Miami. Graham earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from UF in 1959 and earned a law degree from Harvard in 1962.
