Students

The Sacramento State Water Ski Team placed second at the Western Collegiate Water Ski Conference Championships in Phoenix, Az. By placing second the Team will be competing at the 2006 Collegiate Water Ski Nationals October 12-14 in Rio Linda, CA.

Scholarship

Wendy Matlock, English, presented a preview address on the works of Alexander McCall Smith as part of the California Lectures Series at the Crest Theatre on Sept. 27.

Mary Mackey, English, has had her collection of poetry, Breaking the Fever, published by Marsh Hawk Press. On Sept. 26 and Sept. 28, she read her poetry at The McNally/Robinson Bookstore in New York City; on September 27, she read her poetry and explained her creative process to students in the Creative Writing Program at St. John's University, Staten Island, NY.

Judi Kusnick, Geology, will present her research at the 118th annual meeting of the Geological Society of America on Oct. 22-25, 2006 in Philadelphia, PA. The presentations are titled: “Model-based Reasoning in the Professional Development of K-12 Teachers in the Sacramento Area Science Project”; and “Teaching Geological Problem-Solving in Historical Geology.”

Mike Solt, Geology, is presenting his paper titled: “Remotely Sensing La Reforma Caldera by Applying Envi Processing To Aster Image Data “ at the 118th annual meeting of the Geological Society of America on Oct. 22-25 in Philadelphia, PA.

Daniel Deocampo and Wendy Orr, Geology, are presenting research on “Geochemistry Of Environmental Lead in Sacramento, California”, at the 118th annual meeting of the Geological Society of America on Oct.22-25 in Philadelphia, PA.

Matthew H. Silver, Timothy C. Horner and David G. Evans, Geology, are presenting their research, on “Evaluation of Heat as a Tracer to Quantify Longitudinal Water Flow in the Hyporheic Zone”, at the 118th annual meeting of the Geological Society of America on Oct. 22-25 in Philadelphia, PA.

Bridget Parsh, Nursing, attended a course on end-of-life care held in Pasadena, CA. This program took place June 21-23 and was titled “End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium – Graduate Curriculum: Promoting Palliative Care in Advanced Practice Nursing.”

Francisca E. Godinez, Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, edited a book which was published in Sept. titled, “Chicana/Latina Education in Everyday Life: Feminista Perspectives on Pedagogy and Epistemology.”

Sam Rios, Ethnic Studies, presented a paper in Guadalajara, Mexico on "Aging In The USA: A Cross Cultural Perspective."

Boatamo Mosupyoe, Ethnic Studies, has published a book on "Development of Thought in Pan African Studies." She has also been cited in the latest edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers. This is her fourth citation.

Julie Lopez Figueroa, Ethnic Studies, was selected to be the 2006-2007 Scholar-in Residence by the Serna Center. She will research the issue of Latino undergraduate males in higher education.

Roy Dixon, Chemistry, co-authored an article titled, ”Characterization and Evaluation Of Smoke Tracers in PM: Results from the 2003 Montana Wildfire Season,” which will be published in the journal Atmospheric Environment in November.

David Leon, chair of Ethnic Studies was featured on The Bracero Video produced by KVIE. The video is available through the KVIE website.

Andrew Luchansky, Music, was featured in the June 8 Davis Enterprise for his participation in a cello festival in Davis.

Tim Hodson, Center for California Studies, was quoted: in the June 5 Sacramento Bee about slate mailers and their role as campaign tools; in the June 8 Woodland Hills Daily News about politicians’ finding new posts due to term limits; in the June 8 Orange County Register about voter weariness with continual gubernatorial campaigning and in the June 11 Woodland Hills Daily News and Pasadena Star News about Gov. Schwarzenegger’s admission that the 2005 special election was a mistake.

Barbara O’Connor, Communication Studies, was quoted: in the May 24 San Diego Tribune and the June 7 Orange County Register about primary gubernatorial candidate Steve Westly’s political image; in the May 22 Sonora Union Democrat about Gov. Schwarzenegger’s term in office with a budget surplus and in the July 16 Sacramento Bee about Darrell Steinberg’s role representing the Maloof family in the new arena talks.

Michael Semler, Government, was quoted in the June 20 Contra Costa Times and Pleasanton Valley Times about Oakland mayoral candidate Ron Dellums.

Robert Waste, Public Policy and Administration, was featured in the June 22 Winters Express for his role as an advisor to the Yolo County “Blue Ribbon” Economic Development Task Force.

Daniel Okada, Criminal Justice, was quoted in the July 8 Sacramento Bee about the recent spike in juvenile crime in Sacramento County.

Spencer Freund, Computing, Communications and Media Services, was quoted in the July 2006 Comstock’s about the importance of internet connectivity while traveling.

Greg Shaw, Recreation and Leisure Studies, was quoted in the July 2 Sacramento Bee about the decline in American workers taking vacation time.

Timothy Capron, Criminal Justice, was interviewed on Capitol Public Radio on July 5 about the increase in home invasions and how residents can reduce their risk of a home invasion.

Amy Liu, Sociology, was interviewed on Capital Public Radio on July 5 and 6 and on KFBK on July 7 about the lack of affordable housing for Sacramento Region residents and on KFBK on July 7 about civil liberties affected by anti-terror laws.

Sheree Meyer, English, was interviewed on KXTV Channel 10 on July 7 about “Google” becoming an official word in the English language.

Nick Trujillo, Communication Studies, was interviewed on KCRA Channel 3 on July 10 about the new arena talks.

Kimberly Gordon, Child Development, was quoted in the July 8 Sacramento Bee about scheduling activities and monitoring children during summer vacation.
