Spotlight
Bianka
Bommarito and Samantha Hilber,
Biological Sciences student, presented their honors
thesis research in the student competition at the annual
meeting of the American Society of Ichthyologists and
Herpetologists, in Tampa, Fla., July 6. Bommarito’s
oral paper was entitled "Choice
of Spawning Temperature by Neotropical Cichlid Fishes."
Hilber’s paper was titled "Egg Size Through Consecutive
Spawning in the Convict Cichlid."
Recognition
Sacramento State was recognized as one of
the top 10 water ski programs in the country and as a “a
perennial contender at the national level” in the fall
2005 issue of WaterSki magazine.
Kent
Porter has been named associate vice president for
Human Resources. Porter has served in the California State
University system for almost 15 years at both the system and
campus level. He was previously assistant vice president for
Faculty Affairs at CSU Dominguez Hills. Porter will begin
his appointment at Sacramento State on Nov. 1.
WAVE
Camp, a summer camp for young people with disabilities
directed by kinesiology professor Scott Modell, was recognized
by Sacramento County as one of the outstanding collaborative
programs in Sacramento that serve youth. The Sacramento community
made the America’s Promise list of the 100 best communities
for young people. The list was featured in Newsweek
magazine.
Anthony
Sheppard, Recreation and Leisure Studies, and Derek
Bevers, staff member and Anthropology and Digital
Media student, received an honorable mention (2nd Place) at
the Orinda Film Festival in Orinda, Sept. 24. Their submission
"Condiment Love" was an entry in a Cinemasports
sponsored program, in which participants are given 10 hours
to make a finished movie based on a given set of themes. The
two have worked previously on several other projects and Sheppard
is also a director of the Sacramento Film and Music Festival
(www.sacfilm.com),
an all-genre festival that promotes local filmmakers and musicians
as well as screening films submitted from around the world.
Scholarship
Bill
Owen, Communication Studies, has a haiku published
in the Oct. 1 issue of Mainichi Daily News, Tokyo,
Japan.
Sal
Arrigo, Jr., Recreation and Leisure Studies, chaired
a golf tournament to benefit the Alzheimer’s Aid Society
of Northern California. The event raised more than $29,000
to help families and caregivers of those afflicted with Alzheimer’s
disease.
William
DeGraffenreid, Physics and Astronomy, gave a talk
titled "Teaching Professionalism/Ethics to Undergraduates"
at the 2005 American Association of Physics Teachers meeting
on Aug. 10 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Terri
Castaneda, Anthropology, presented the paper "'Come
to the Dark Side'.....What is Authenticity in Museums?"
at the annual meeting of the Western Museums Association in
Pasadena, Sept. 28-Oct. 2.
Diana
Tumminia, Sociology, had her book When Prophecy
Never Fails published by Oxford University Press.
Ron
Coleman, Biological Sciences, presented an oral paper
entitled "Storms, Growth and Egg Size in Riverine Neotropical
Cichlids" at the annual meeting of the American Society
of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, in Tampa, Fla. on July
6.
In the News
Roger
Sullivan, Anthropology, had his research on the evolution
of human drug use featured in an article by science writer
Meredith Small in the September issue of the Australian science
magazine Cosmos.
Beth Kivel, Recreation and Leisure Studies,
had a letter to the editor published in the June 23 Sacramento
News & Review in response to a story about the Oak
Park neighborhood. Kivel was also interviewed on KCRA Channel
3 for the National Night Out Event on Aug. 4.
