Competition set for bloody battle
between Sacramento State and UC Davis

Sacramento State and UC Davis have competed in a number of activities for years. But, there’s a new competition and it’s guaranteed to draw blood.

Both universities will participate in a blood drive sponsored by the Sacramento BloodSource blood center in support of the Causeway Classic, the annual football game between Sacramento State and UC Davis.

The blood drive competition runs Oct. 20-Nov. 7, and the goal is to see which school can register the greatest number of donors.

BloodSource will set up a mobile blood center in the University Union Ballroom, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 20-21. This drive is sponsored by the Union and the Associated Students Inc.

A blood center will be set up from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday, Nov. 3 in the residence halls area. The hall with the most donors will win a DVD player and pizza party.

A drive for faculty and staff will be held Nov. 6. The location and time has not been determined yet.

Blood donors will receive a free T-shirt and a ticket to see the movie Wild Ocean 3D at the Esquire IMAX Theater. Donors will also be eligible to win one of 20 iPods, four $100 Target gift cards, four $100 gas cards and eight $25 Java City gift cards.

There is also a competition for student organizations. The organization with the most participants will receive $500 to spend on an approved event.

The winning school will receive a trophy to be presented at the Causeway Classic. The game is 2:05 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8 at UC Davis.

According to BloodSource, only 38 percent of the people in the U.S. are eligible to donate blood, but less than 10 percent do.

“Blood donations help save lives because there is no substitute for human blood,” says Dawn Deason, BloodSource public affairs manager. “We need to collect 700 units per day in our area to meet the general needs for our hospitals.”

She says one of the main reasons people do not give blood is the thought of being pricked with a needle. “The stick itself is less painful than a flu shot or an ear piercing.”

Candidates must be at least 17 years old, in good health and must weigh at least 110 pounds. A photo ID will be required.
