Scholarship

Frank LaPena,
Ethnic Studies Emeritus, has an exhibit of his art work at Pacific Western Traders, 305 Wool Street, Folsom. “Cycles of Songs and Stories” runs through Nov. 16. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. LaPena’s work reflects his Native American heritage and his works have been displayed at the Chicago Art Institute, San Francisco Museum and the Linder Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.

Ron Coleman, Biological Sciences, presented talks about his and his students' research on cichlid fishes to various aquarium societies in the last six months venues included the Minnesota Aquarium Society (Minneapolis, May), the American Cichlid Association (Atlanta, July) and the Greater Cincinnati Aquarium Society (Cincinnati, September).

Brad Buchanan, English, was mentioned on June 29 in the Davis Enterprise regarding his performance as a featured reader at Poetry Night at Bistro 33.

Timothy Capron, Criminal Justice, was quoted on July 6 in the Sacramento Bee concerning the allocation of patrol police officers in the city.

Wilfrido Corral, Foreign Languages, authored a commentary in the Chronicle of Higher Education on June 6.

Tim Hodson, Center for California Studies, was quoted on June 17 in the Monterey Californian regarding a same sex marriage ballot initiative.

Barbara O’ Connor, Communication Studies, was quoted on July 3 in the Los Angeles Times concerning the political aspirations of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsome and on July 11 in the Sacramento Bee regarding the sentencing of Roberto Vellanoweth, a former Schwarzenegger appointee found guilty of manslaughter.

Kenneth Owens, History, was quoted on June 7, 10 and 13 in the Desert Sun , San Mateo Times and the Las Vegas Review Journal (respectively) regarding a new collection of Gold Rush era documents on display. 

Ali Porbaha, Engineering and Computer Science, was mentioned on July 4 in the Sacramento Business Journal as the recipient of the Excellence in Civil Engineering Education New Faculty Excellence Award.

Dennis Tootelian, Business Administration, was quoted in the Sacramento Bee on July 4 concerning a new product launch at area chain supermarkets.
