Newsome named Special Assistant to the President

Chevelle Newsome, Associate Dean for Graduate Studies at Sacramento State, has been named Special Assistant to the President by University President Alexander Gonzalez.

In her new role, Newsome will focus on developing diversity initiatives related to the goals of the University’s Destination 2010 initiative. She will also serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet.

Newsome earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in communication studies from Sacramento State and a doctorate in political communication at the University of Oklahoma. She joined the Sacramento State faculty in 1994 and has served as the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies since the summer of 2004.

In addition to being an educator, Newsome is an author, editor, public speaker, communication consultant, and advocate for at-risk and underrepresented individuals. She has published several articles relating to the communication of race in American society and women’s issues in healthcare.
