Professional Activities

Students

The Sacramento Debate Team won multiple awards on Oct. 21 and 22 at the Pepperdine University Debate Tournament in Malibu, CA. Chantel Crane and Adrienne Yoseph were quarter-finalists in the junior-varsity division. Ramshin Daneshi and Kaitlin Ferrick were semi-finalists in the novice division. In overall top speaker awards, Crane took eighth place in junior varsity, Daneshi took ninth place in novice, and Ferrick took fourth place in novice.

The Sacramento State Water Ski Team hosted the 27th annual National Collegiate Water Ski Championships at Bell Acqua Lakes in Rio Linda, CA, on Oct. 12-14. The team, including Mathew Nantze, Justin Pingatore, Kaitlyn Wilson, Andrea Neely, and Ryan Selsor placed a combined fifth. Nearly 300 athletes competed in slalom, trick and jump.


Scholarship

Maureen Smith, Kinesiology and Health Science, will have her article “Bill Russell: Pioneer and Champion of the Sixties," published in the book titled: Out of the Shadows: A Biographical History of African-American Athletes, which is coming out this month from the University of Arkansas Press.

Wayne Maeda, Ethnic Studies, presented an in-service workshop for Elk Grove teachers, "Here In America?: 12/7 and 9/11" drawing historical parallels between Dec. 7, and Sept. 11.

Ann Weldy, English, was the keynote speaker at the annual convention of the Golden Crown Literary Society in Atlanta in June. Her topic was "An Unfinished Journey: Mid-20th Century Popular Fiction by Women." She presented a paper on "Directions in Contemporary Women's Fiction" at the Golden Key Association in Provincetown, MA. in June; she appeared at the annual Book Collector's Show in New York City and she was interviewed on the New York Public Radio station WYNC about her paperback novels of the 1950s and 60s, written as Ann Bannon in October. An off-Broadway play titled: "The Beebo Brinker Chronicles," based on three of her Ann Bannon novels, is planned for presentation in June 2007.

Barbara O’Connor, Communications, was quoted: in the Aug 1 West County Times and San Ramon Daily News about Schwarzenegger having the upper hand over Angelides in the gubernatorial election; in the Aug. 9 San Francisco Chronicle and the Aug. 10 Santa Cruz Sentinel about legislative campaign contributions from lobbyists; in the Aug. 23 Sacramento Bee about the Maloof’s public image in Sacramento and in the Aug. 22 Sacramento Bee regarding the strong influence the political television program “Voz y Voto” has on Hispanic voters; and was interviewed on KFBK 1530 on Aug. 18 about the media frenzy surrounding the Jonbenet Ramsey murder confession.

Cecil Canton, Criminal Justice, was quoted in the July 20 Torrance Daily Breeze about recent budget cuts at California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Robert Metcalf, Biological Sciences, was quoted in the Aug. 22 Sacramento Bee about the benefits of solar cookers.

Michael Semler, Government, was quoted in the Aug. 16 San Francisco Chronicle about the bipartisan popularity of Gov. Schwarzenegger.

John Syer, Government, was quoted on KXTV-News10 on Aug. 17 about the lack of support for Gov. Schwarzenegger from Latino voters.

Amy Liu, Sociology, was interviewed on KFBK 1530 and Capital Public Radio on Aug. 18 and 19 about her survey gauging Sacramento residents’ level of satisfaction with their way of life in Sacramento.

Timothy Fong, Ethnic Studies, and Gregory Kim-Ju, Psychology, were interviewed on KTXL Fox 40 on Aug. 20 about their Asian census study.

Christopher Taylor, Astronomy and Physics, was interviewed on KCRA Channel 3 and KFBK 1530 on Aug. 24 and on KXTV-News 10 on Aug. 25 about the reasons why Pluto was reclassified from a planet to a dwarf planet.
