Rock Auction on tap

Rock Auction on tap

Sacramento State’s Geology Club will hold its seventh annual rock auction, 6 p.m. Friday, Nov 19, in the University Alumni Center.

Club members have been working for weeks, according to club president Katy O’Donnell, to provide a large collection of rocks that should attract professionals and amateur rock hounds alike. The gathering’s goal is to raise funds for the club with nearly all of the proceeds going to help subsidize field-trip costs for Sac State’s future geologists. Auction coordinator Robin Wham, a Sac State graduate and geology major, says that some of the funds will be used to make “rock boxes” that will be provided to underfunded local schools.

There will be silent and live auctions of hundreds of rocks, gems, fossils and minerals that draw numerous bids as the time-limit approaches. Dave Evans, chair of the department and auctioneer for the event, says that things can get a tad “frantic” as collectors keep raising the stakes with escalating bids.

It’s all good fun for a particularly good cause. Last year’s auction raised more than $7,500, and the club is hoping for an even larger return this year. In addition to the extensive array of specimens for purchase, there will be catered food and beverages, a children’s table with games and mystery gift bags.

The rock auction’s festive atmosphere enables community members to enjoy themselves while mingling with Sac State students and faculty.

Auction specimens vary in size from pebbles to large rocks for gardens and include striking crystals, geodes, fossils, highly polished rocks and gems. “This year we have some spectacular museum-quality donations,” Evans says.

The items are donated by students, faculty, local firms and mineral collectors. To donate a sample for the auction, or for more information about the event, email the club at sacstategeologyclub@gmail.com or call Wham at (916) 995-1436.
