Student spotlight

Biological Sciences student Samantha Hilber presented her honors thesis research in the student competition at the annual meeting of Sigma Xi on Nov. 4 in Seattle. Her poster paper was entitled "Egg size through consecutive spawning in the convict cichlid."

Geology students Beth Sehan and Mandy Plaskett were awarded scholarships by the Sacramento Mineral Society last weekend. Sehan received $1,000 and Plaskett received $500. The scholarships were awarded at the Society's 63rd Annual Gem and Jewelry Show.

The Division of Social Work hosted a reception on Oct. 25 for the Sacramento State students displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The reception allowed students to meet faculty and staff in the division, as well as other similarly affected students attending this university. Representatives from several county agencies provided information and practical assistance.


Grants

Nancy Shulock, Institute for Higher Education Leadership and Policy, has received, on behalf of the institute, a $275,000 grant from the Hewlett Foundation to improve finance policy for the California Community Colleges and build capacity in the legislature and executive branch to enact better policy for higher education.


Scholarship

Robert Ortbal, Art, has recent work featured in a group exhibition at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art exhibit "Ornamentation: The Art of Desire." It is on display through Jan. 7.

Craig Gallet, Economics, had his paper entitled "Cyclicality and the Labor Market for Economists" published in the October edition of the Southern Economic Journal.

George I. Paganelis, Library, delivered a paper entitled "Creating an Index for Modern Greek Studies" at the 19th biennial Modern Greek Studies Association Symposium on Nov. 5 in Chicago.

Suzanne Sutherland, Nursing, co-presented three papers and one poster at the biennial meeting of the Canadian Association of Burn Nurses in Toronto, Sept. 21-24: “Survival and Burns in Elders,” “Using a Developmentally Appropriate Pediatric Model to Care for Adult Schizophrenics in a Burn Unit,” “A Primary Nurse for Each Burn Patient,” and “An Effective Method for Clearing Clogged Feeding Tubes.”

Robyn Nelson, Nursing, co-authored FA Davis RN-NCLEX Success, 2nd edition, published in November.

Greg Bourne and David Booher, Center for Collaborative Policy, presented at a conference session of the California Chapter of the American Planning Association. The session, "When the Public Gets Angry, What Do You Do Next," focused on addressing challenges to public participation that frequently arise in public hearings.

The Applied Research Center received a contract with the Campaign for College Opportunity for a study of the long-range economic impacts on the California economy that can occur if there is a serious reduction in the higher educated workforce. The principal investigator will be Robert Fountain. The study will apply economic analysis to education access data from Nancy Shulock of the Institute for Higher Education Leadership and Policy and the UC California Census Research Data Center.

William A. Dorman, Government, was quoted in an analysis of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's current political fortunes that appeared Nov. 6 in El Pais, Spain's leading national newspaper.

Julia Milardovich, Bookstore Services, was interviewed Sept. 2 on KTXL Channel 40 about the causes of textbook price increases.

Miguel Molina, Admissions and Records, was interviewed Sept. 7 on KCRA Channel 3 and KQCA Channel 58, and Sept. 8 on KTXL Channel 40, about how Sacramento State is helping Hurricane Katrina victims attend the University.

Tim Hodson, Center for California Studies, was quoted Sept. 10 in a Sacramento Bee article about whether or not Gov. Schwarzenegger represents the majority of Californians when using his vetoing power.

Robert Mogull, Management Information Science, was quoted on Sept. 7 in the Marin Independent Journal and Long Beach Press Telegram about his Census Bureau analysis that showed an increase in poverty among certain minority groups in California.

Rob Wassmer, Public Policy and Administration, was quoted in the September issue of Comstock’s magazine regarding the factors people consider when buying a house.

Barbara O’Connor, Communications Studies, was quoted in a Sept. 7 San Francisco Chronicle article about the increase in the number of liberal talk radio shows on the air.
