On the Job with the Serna Center

The Bulletin spoke with Ted Lascher, director of the Serna Center, and Maria Ramirez, administrative support assistant for the Center.

What do people think you do?
“I’m not sure, but I hope everyone is conscious of the events the Center is responsible for.”

What do you really do?
“We spend a lot of time on major events such as the Latino Film Festival and various speakers. There’s also some behind the scenes work having to do with raising money and reviewing scholarship applications. We also work on research related to the Center. The Center focuses on Latino and educational issues.”

Describe your office.
“Our office is a little tucked away and not immediately apparent from outside. We’re across from the Library and next to Java City. We have nice artwork and posters from past events. We also have a beautiful sculpture of Joe and Isabel Serna, as well as a bust of Joe and one of Isabel. They were recently donated to us by Phil Serna.”

What surprises people?
“There are a number of things—Joe was such a major figure that there are various things that are named for him now. He has a physical legacy at various places. For instance, the headquarters for the Sacramento City Unified School District Headquarters is named the Serna Center.”

What is your biggest challenge?
“We’re continually trying to find the right mix of events and speakers that will engage a wide variety of people. We’re focused on students and faculty, as well as the larger community.”

What do you get asked the most?
“’What do you do?’ We also get questions about our scholarship program and specific events.”
