Scholarship

David Booher, Center for Collaborative Planning, presented a talk on collaborative regional initiatives at the annual conference of the Municipal Managers Association of Northern California on Oct. 26 at the Squaw Creek Resort.

Beth Kivel, Recreation and Leisure Studies, was one of three discussants at the Oct. 2006 National Recreation and Park Association conference in Seattle, WA. Part of the George Butler Lecture series, her topic was titled, “Re-Reading David Gray and the Politics of Leisure,” and was a tribute to the contributions of the late Dr. Gray, the first President of the Academy of Leisure Sciences.

Greg Shaw, Recreation and Leisure Studies, helped facilitate a roundtable discussion titled, “Let's Talk Healthy Lifestyles,” at the Oct. 2006 National Recreation and Park Association conference in Seattle, Washington. His topic centered on the role of urban design in promoting healthy lifestyles through park and recreation programs.

Chris Taylor, Physics and Astronomy, was interviewed for a story in the Sacramento Bee on the transit of Mercury on Nov. 8. The article appeared on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

Robert G. Jones, Vice President Emeritus of University Advancement, was elected on Nov. 7 to the seven-member Los Rios Community College Board of Trustees. Jones served as Vice President for University Affairs between 1984 and 2004.

Nancy Shulock, Institute for Higher Education Leadership and Policy, was quoted for an article on the access gap to college in the San Francisco Chronicle on Tuesday, Nov.14 on the report “State of Decline? Gaps in College Access and Achievement Call for Renewed Commitment to Educating Californians;” was on PBS News Hour with Jim Leherer which aired on Monday, November 6 for a story on the nursing shortage.

Jeff Lustig, Government, was quoted in the Los Angeles Times on Oct. 15 about the Schwarzenegger vote in the context of national trends, and had a letter to the editor in the Chronicle of Higher Education on July 28.

Barbara O’Connor, Communication Studies, was quoted: in the Sept. 27 Marysville Appeal-Democrat about Jerry Brown’s qualifications to be California’s attorney general; in the Sept. 4 Grass Valley Union about Gov. Schwarzenegger’s ability to break a partisan deadlock in the legislature; in the Sept. 10 Stockton Record about the lack of support Phil Angelides received from San Joaquin Valley farmers; in the Sept. 9 Orange County Register about the lack of ethical or legal requirements for the Times to disclose where it received the Governor’s taped, closed-door conversations; in the Sept. 17 Contra Costa Times, Pleasanton Valley Times, San Ramon Valley Times and San Mateo County Times about the importance of debates for voters to size up candidates; in the Sept. 13 Tri-Valley Herald and San Mateo County Times about the public’s willingness to forgive the personal faults of the governor; in the Oct. 1 Sacramento Bee about the almost-certain failure of Measures Q and R; in the Sept. 21 Sacramento News and Review about campaigns polls being somewhat suspect because of the way they are worded; and was interviewed on Oct. 6 on KCRA 3 and KOVR 13 about the gubernatorial debate and on Oct. 6 on KTXL Fox 40 about Angelides’ message not resonating with voters.

Tim Hodson, Center for California Studies, was quoted: in the Sept. 16 San Mateo County Times about the regional biases that could prevent some bonds from passing; in the Sept. 28 Contra Costa Times and Pleasanton Valley Times about the political theatre in some of the campaigns leading up to the election and in the Sept. 18 San Mateo County Times, Tri-Valley Herald and Hayward Daily Review and the Sept. 19 West County Times, Pleasanton Valley Times and San Ramon Valley Times about the high turnover rate in the legislature due to term limits.

Kathryn Hadley, Sociology, was quoted in the Oct. 2 Sacramento Bee about the misperception of teen gatherings as something more than simple get-togethers.

William Vizzard, Criminal Justice, was quoted in the Oct. 2 Sacramento Bee about the ability to reduce homicides through direct police pressure.

Robert Waste, Public Policy and Administration, was quoted in the Oct. 16 Sacramento Bee about the Sacramento rail yard development being on the public agenda because of the arena discussions.

Chrisopher Witko, Government, was interviewed on Sept. 29 on KOVR 13 about how most voters, in spite of not knowing many issues, make reasonable decisions.

John Syer, Government, was interviewed on Oct. 2 and 3 on KXTV News 10 about the possibility of Charlie Brown unseating incumbent John Doolittle in the upcoming election.

Stephen Brock, Special Education, Rehabilitation and School Psychology, was interviewed on Oct. 2 on KXTV News 10 about the Pennsylvania school shooting and the role mental illness plays in extreme acts of violence.
