You
could call Kris Watson, who marks her 26th year on the Sacramento State staff
in December, an original. She was one of the founding members of the University
Staff Assembly (U.S.A.) back in the 1980s and helped start what has become an
annual tradition, “The U.S.A.’s Holiday Social.”
“We thought
it was important for the staff to have its own organization and it is great
to see how successful U.S.A. has become,” Watson says.
Since joining the
campus, Watson has moved from the payroll office to the staff employment office,
and earlier this year was promoted to manager of faculty and management employment.
“I enjoy the whole process of making sure that the employment process
works smoothly for people on campus,” she says.
Watson, who is
originally from the Midwest, began her career in human resources at UC San Diego
while her husband served in the Navy. After spending some time in Riverside
County, Watson moved to Sacramento and joined the University as a payroll technician
in 1980. She has worked to process new hires, promotions and other related employment
issues.
“I have enjoyed
meeting and talking with so many people on campus,” says Watson. “And
it is especially gratifying to keep in contact with people and see them move
up in their careers on campus.”
In her new job,
Watson will continue to be involved in the implementation of the human resources
functions in the new common management system, also known as People Soft. “I’ve
been involved from the ground floor and watched it take shape,” she says.
“Believe it or not, I have enjoyed being part of the implementation process.”
Watson indicated
one of the things she loves about the campus is its grounds. “The grounds
are landscaped so well that it is always a pleasure to take a walk across the
campus.” Watson added that she looks forward to taking lunchtime walks
along American River Parkway or over the Guy West Bridge.
After work you’ll
often find Watson attending musical concerts by musicians of all backgrounds.
“I enjoy going and being a part of the experience of a live concert,"
said Watson, who is also an avid Sacramento Kings fan.
