Mary Mackey, English, read selections from her new novel, The Notorious Mrs. Winston, on Nov. 10 at the Glendale Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library. On Nov. 12, Mackey gave a lecture to the Indiana Civil War Round Table entitled, "Raiding History for Fiction." Her poem, Mongoose Civique, won honorable mention in the Tow Auto Museum’s third annual Poetry Contest and has been published in Free-wheeling, an anthology of the winners.
Rob Wassmer, Public Policy and Administration, presented his paper titled, "An Empirical Test of the Success of Community Planning Councils as a Way to Satisfy the Tieboutian Drive for Local Control," at the 100th annual meeting of the National Tax Association on Nov. 17 in Columbus, Ohio. The paper will appear in a printed version of the conference's proceedings.
Bill Owen, Communication Studies, had a science fiction novel entitled, The Anonym, published by Lulu.com.

Recognition
Kay Moore, Teacher Education, was inducted into the California Reading Association Hall of Fame at the annual conference of the organization in Ontario (Nov. 8-10). This award was established in 1989 to honor distinguished Californians whose contributions through scholarship, research, authorship and/or leadership have had a significant and lasting impact on reading improvement. Moore is the 26th person in the state to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Lani Fraizer, Continuing Education, was appointed chair of communications by the ACM SIGITE, where she will work closely with its international group of IT educators. A recipient of the 2007 Women in IT scholarship awarded by the National Science Foundation, Fraizer will also spearhead SIGITE's women and IT initiatives, which focuses on broadening participation of women in computing. Fraizer’s areas of research include workforce development, organizational leadership, and information technology.
Student Spotlight
Shelby Kantar, a Physical Therapy major, won the silver medal at the 2007 IWSF Wakeboard World Championships. The championships were held in Doha, Qatar. Kantar competed as a member of the prestigious U.S. Worlds team in Wakeboarding in the open women’s category and was the only member on the team from the Western United States.
