Professional Activities


The Sacramento State Bulletin welcomes submissions to the Professional Activities section from faculty, administration and staff. Items are run on a space available basis. They should be no longer than 75 words and may be submitted to bulletin@csus.edu or, if necessary, faxed to 278-5290.


Scholarship

Richard Aguirre and Carlos Montanez, undergraduates in Biological Sciences, presented posters at the 2006 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students on November 8-11, in Anaheim, CA. Their posters were entitled "Investigating Offspring production of Pelvicachromis pulcher" and "Cichlids and their choices to breed" respectively.

Sacramento State's Taekwondo Team competed in a sparring scrimmage against UCLA, USC and UC Irvine on October 7. The Sac State team, who won all of their matches, are trained by 5th degree black belt and Hall of Fame Recipient Barbara Brand.

Scholarship

Lisa Beutler, Center for Collaborative Policy, was featured in an article in the Journal of the American Planning Association titled "Making Participation Work When Interests Conflict: Moving from Facilitating Dialogue and Moderating Debate to Mediating Negotiations." She also presented a paper on "Managing Collaboration with Limited Resources" at the Region 5 USDA Forest Service annual Public Affairs conference in Sacramento on November 28.

Bill Leach, Center for Collaborative Policy, authored a book review titled "Adaptive Governance and Water: New Institutions for Collaborative Planning" which appears in the current Journal of the American Planning Association.

Mark Stoner, Communication Studies, has been named 2007 Master Teacher by the Western States Communication Association in recognition of his "rich pedagogical contributions to instructional communication, teacher training, rhetorical criticism pedagogy, and graduate training." Stoner will make a presentation on teaching and learning as intellectual exploration at the WSCA annual conference in Seattle, WA.

Rob Wassmer and Ted Lascher, Public Policy and Administration, presented their co-authored paper with Stephan Kroll, Economics, on "State and Local Tax and Expenditure Choices as Determinants of Individual Happiness" at 99th Annual Conference in Taxation in Boston on November 17.

Hellen Lee-Keller, English, will be facilitating a film screening and discussion of “An American Journey,” an hour-long documentary about African-American author Ralph Ellison, at the 40 Acres Art Gallery in Oak Park on Saturday, December 9 at 2 p.m.

Tony Platt, Social Work, will have his essay titled “Reconstructing Race and Crime: The Radical Tradition Revisited" published in the book Racializing Justice, Disenfranchising Lives in 2007. This book is the first in a series of special topic readers in "The Critical Black Studies Series."

Kirtland E. Stout, Environmental Health and Safety, made a one half hour presentation on pandemic influenza planning on September 20. The presentation was made to a group of public school district superintendents and other administrators at a forum for Pandemic Influenza Planning organized by the Sacramento County Department of Education and the Sacramento County Health Department. The forum was held in the offices of the Sacramento County Department of Education at Mather Field.

Barbara O’Connor, Communication Studies, was quoted: in the Oct. 7 San Diego Tribune about the advantages of the unscripted gubernatorial debate at Sacramento State; in the Sept. 17 Long Beach Press Telegram and the Sept. 22 San Jose Mercury-News about the importance of debates for voters to size up candidates; in the Oct. 12 Marysville Appeal-Democrat about the close race for the 4th Congressional District between John Doolittle and Charlie Brown; in the Oct. 11 Los Angeles Times about major donors dooming their initiatives by dropping out; in the Oct. 1 Stockton Record about term limits fostering a class of lawmakers who don’t know their constituents as well as they once did; in the Sept. 29 San Luis Obispo Tribune about Jerry Brown’s advantage in the attorney general race in a state that is largely Democratic; in the Oct. 9 Los Angeles Times about Gov. Schwarzenegger’s screen presence outweighing Angelides’ in the debate; in the Oct. 18 West County Times about the negative implications of voicing opposing political viewpoints with friends and family and in the Oct. 22 San Francisco Chronicle about the effectiveness of Gov. Timothy Hodson, Center for California Studies, was quoted: in the Oct. 8 San Ramon Valley Times, Monterey County Herald and San Jose Mercury-News about Angelides’ lack of a knockout performance in the gubernatorial debate; in the Oct. 2 Woodland Hills Daily News about political parties using niche marketing techniques to woo voters; in the Oct. 1 Woodland Hills Daily News about Gov. Schwarzenegger vetoing bills at a lower rate in 2006 than in previous years; in the Oct. 15 San Ramon Valley Times about what Gov. Schwarzenegger’s style of leadership will be if he is re-elected; in the Oct. 20 Marin Independent Journal and San Jose Mercury-News and the Oct. 22 Contra Costa Times about the upsurge in voting via absentee ballot; in the Oct. 22 Contra Costa Times and the Oct. 23 Oakland Tribune about Gov. Schwarzenegger’s and Phil Angelides’ about their limited environmental interests and in the Oct. 23 San Francisco Chronicle about Senator Dianne Feinstein’s wide appeal.

Dennis Tootelian, Center for Small Business, was quoted in the Sept. 2 Lodi News-Sentinel about the six major factors businesses will consider before setting up shop in order to make a profit.

Kathryn Hadley, Sociology, was quoted in the Oct. 3 Chico Enterprise-Record about the misperception of teen gatherings as anything else than just hanging out and having fun.

Jeff Lustig, Government, was quoted in the Oct. 15 Los Angeles Times about California becoming more Republican-friendly than in the past.

William Vizzard, Criminal Justice, was quoted in the Sept. 28 Capitol Weekly about California’s lawmakers rewriting and simplifying the state’s gun laws.

Mary Mackey, English, was featured in the Oct. 17 Sacramento Bee about her work as a creative writer.

Nancy Shulock, Institute for Higher Education Leadership and Policy, was quoted in the Oct. 22 San Jose Mercury-News about the climbing college attendance rate in the Bay Area as reflective of the demographics of its population. She also was on the Los Angeles PBS affiliate KPCC “AirTalk” segment to discuss the recent Public Policy Institute of California report on low community college completion rates.

Gloria Solomon, Kinesiology and Health Science, was quoted in the Oct. 27 Sacramento Bee about the pressures athletes face to perform in front of crowds.

Nadeen Ruiz, Bilingual and Multicultural Education, was quoted in the Oct. 21 Sacramento Bee about charter schools that offer a specialized curriculum for high school-aged immigrant children.

Robert Waste, Public Policy and Administration, was interviewed on Oct. 19 on KCRA Channel 3 about Proposition 87.
