Data warehouse naming contest
Information Technology and Resources is in the process of implementing a data warehouse for the campus and is running a competition to name the system.
The system is currently referred to as either the Data Warehouse, or Cognos (the tool that it’s built on). However, IRT would like find a name that reflects how integral this system is to the University. To enter the naming competition, e-mail suggestions to Helen Norris at Helen.email@example.com by March 6. The winner will be announced in mid-March.
The data warehouse is a one-stop shopping place for reporting needs and allowing people to generate reports with data from numerous systems. For more details on the system, contact Norris. Submitted by Information Resources and Technology
Technology assisted classroom orientation
An orientation session will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., Friday, Feb. 20, at Benicia Hall 1025 for instructors teaching in the new technology assisted classrooms (Sequoia Hall 301, Sequoia Hall 316, or Benicia Hall 1025).
The sessions will teach participants to connect either Windows or Macintosh laptops to the video projector; playback a DVD, VHS tape or campus TV; switch video sources between laptops, desktop computers, DVD/VCR players, or document camera; adjust the volume; turn closed-captioning on or off; what cables are needed to connect laptops; and how to report a problem or request assistance.
Employee of the Month
February Employees of the Month are Cheryl Stone and Jeff Weston.
Stone is the senior accounting assistant with University Enterprises, Inc. Her colleagues indicated that "She works well with campus individuals to ensure the university receives prompt and accurate reimbursement for products and services provided to the auxiliary.” Her nominator described Cheryl as "Having established many procedures for tracking services and payments allowing for easy retrieval of information and history."
Weston is the Veterans’ Affairs coordinator with the Office of the University Registrar. He was described as "Instrumental in the efforts to create a welcoming campus environment where returning veteran students receive broad services in an efficient and supportive manner." His colleague indicated, "Through Jeff’s work, Sacramento State is recognized as one of the top two CSU campuses leading this effort." As his nominator wrote, "Jeff's recent work on the Troop's to College initiative helped garner the attention of Congresswoman Doris Matsui, bringing her to campus this past fall to recognize deserving Veteran students."
Multilingual Writers Workshop
Writing Across the Curriculum and the Multi-Cultural Center will hold a campus-wide workshop, "Multilingual Student Writers: Language and Cultural Diversity in the Classroom," noon-1:15 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 26, in the Folsom Room of the Union. One Book luncheon
Sacramento State faculty are invited to attend a One Book Program presentation and luncheon focused on the 2009-10 One Book, When the Emperor Was Divine, by Julie Otsuka, 11:45 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Friday, March 6, at the University Center Restaurant.

Anticipated vacancies for part-time instructors
Sacramento State is anticipating a need for part-time instructors for the 2009-2010 academic year. A master's degree in the subject area is the normal minimum requirement, although a doctorate level degree is preferred. Supplemental degree requirements are listed with the subject area.
Teaching experience in the subject area is desirable and may be required. Additional qualifications may be required by individual departments. Salary rate is variable depending upon qualifications and relevant experience.

Shawn Ginwright, an associate professor at San Francisco State University, will be the guest speaker at the 15th annual Multicultural Education Conference, 8 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 21, in the University Union. The conference is free and open to the public.
The program is sponsored by the Bilingual/Multicultural Education Department to provide an opportunity for Sacramento State faculty and educators to help promote multicultural education in K-12 public schools in the Sacramento region. Submitted by the Bilingual/Multicultural Education Department
Student research competition
The Office of Research Administration will host the 23rd Annual Student Research Competition Saturday, March 7, 8 a.m.-2 p.m., in Mariposa Hall, room 1001. Up to 10 students will be selected to present at the statewide competition to be held at CSU, Los Angeles May 1-2.
Application guidelines are available at www.csus.edu/research/student/researchcomp.htm. Faculty and staff are asked to encourage students to participate. The deadline to apply is Monday, March 2. Faculty jurors are also needed for the local competition on Saturday, March 7th.

Proposal Development Workshops
The Research Administration office offers proposal development workshops in February. Faculty, staff and graduate students are invited to attend.
“National Science Foundation FastLane Overview and Interactive Demo,” 9-10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 18, Foothill Suite, University Union. This workshop is for those new to FastLane, the interactive, web-based system used for the submission of grant proposals and project reports to NSF.
“Funding Sources, Funding Searches,” 9-10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 27, Hornet Bookstore Building, Boardroom (Suite 3010). This interactive workshop is for people interested in seeking funding for research ideas or who currently have grants and would like to seek supplemental support. Participants will learn about online resources including the Sponsored Programs Information Network (SPIN) and will discuss ways to ensure funding opportunities are a mutual good fit.

Webinar on employment agreements The Research Administration office is hosting an 11-part webinar course from the National Center on Entrepreneurial Tech Transfer on the essentials of commercialization for researchers.
The topic of the next session is “The Fundamental Essentials: Tech Transfer and Licensing Agreements.” It will be broadcast from 10 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, Feb. 11, in the Hornet Bookstore Building Boardroom (suite 3010).
Catastrophic leave donation program Sacramento State employees may voluntarily donate to other employees up to a maximum of 40 hours of sick or vacation leave credits in one-hour increments each fiscal year. Bargaining Units 1, 8, 10 and 11 may only donate up to 16 hours per fiscal year. If employees are interested in donating time, a donation form can be obtained at www.csus.edu/hr/forms.htm#Disability, or by visiting the Human Resources Disability Leaves office in Sacramento Hall 162, or by calling 278-3522.
