President Gonzalez updates budget picture at town hall meeting
University President Alexander Gonzalez and other campus officials presented the latest figures and answered several questions about Sacramento State’s budget and furlough days during a town hall meeting in Hinde Auditorium on Thursday, Aug. 6. President’s fall address

University President Alexander Gonzalez will give his fall address to the campus community at 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 27, in the University Union Ballroom. Coffee and light refreshments will be served at 9 a.m., in the adjoining ballroom. University staff members who wish to attend should secure the permission of their supervisors.

Student employment workshop

The Human Resources office will hold a workshop on student employment 8-10 a.m., Thursday, Aug., 20, in the University Union’s Lobby Suite.
Titled, “How to Effectively Hire and Retain a Student Assistant,” the workshop is designed for people involved in recruiting and hiring student assistants and will cover student eligibility, classification, recruiting, assignments and hours and evaluations.
Presenters include representatives from Human Resources, Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, financial aid (Federal Work Study) and Global Education will provide updated information, as well as review best practices.
Representatives from the Career Center and University Enterprises, Inc., will also be available.

Research Funding Update

The August issue of Research Funding Update is now available. This update is published monthly to alert the campus community to possible sources of external support for research, scholarly and creative activities. An abbreviated listing and a more detailed version are available on the web at http://www.csus.edu/research/funding/update.

This month’s highlight includes a feature article about the National Institutes of Health Academic Research Enhancement Award grants program along with targeted funding opportunity notices in arts, humanities, education, community development, health, mental health, science and engineering.

Golden Hornet Award

Gary L. Quattrin, class of 1965, will be presented the Golden Hornet Award from the Sacramento State Alumni Association Football and Friends Chapter, 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 22, in the Alumni Center. Quattrin has been a longtime supporter of the University and its football program.

Scheduled Maintenance
In order to upgrade the University Datacenter network switches, a shutdown is scheduled for a period of six hours from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14. This shutdown has been scheduled for midnight to minimize the impact on the university students, faculty and staff. Although the actual length of service interruption may be shorter for some systems, IRT recommend that users plan for the full implementation window. The university web site will be up and available.

Impact on End users:
Please note that users will be able to Logon to their workstations and connect to the Internet.
It is recommended that you restart your workstation after the outage.
All incoming e-mail will be queued and delivered to your mailbox when maintenance is completed.

This upgrade will result in an outage for most enterprise systems listed below:

Exchange e-mail: Outlook Web Access, Outlook Mobile Access (smart phone e-mail)
SacCT: Online learning system
SacVault: Cognos and Datawarehouse reporting system (finance data used for reporting will not be updated Friday)
SacFiles: Network storage such as U drive, personal or departmental drives
Skyprint, Pharos: Printing systems
Astra: Room scheduling system
My Sac State: University portal system
CMS: Connection to CMS through uPortal system
L-Soft: Listserv system
HEAT: Workflow and ticketing system
StarRez: Housing application
Wireless Access: Wireless logins and internet connections will not be available

Members who pay with their OneCard can get any Pita Pit pita for $3.99, and Zambezi Frozen Yogurt & Wild Salads is offering a 16 oz. yogurt with hot and dry toppings on the bottom two rows for $5. The Human Resources Benefits Office has scheduled a series of informational workshops on pre-retirement planning. In addition, Department of Personnel Administration (401k and 457 plans) and CSU Tax-Sheltered Annuity (430b plans) approved vendors will provide information on managing finances and investment contributions. Representatives will be available for scheduled one-on-one client meetings.  
The HR Benefits Office is available for scheduled one-on-one employee meetings about this information, but individuals are asked to consider attending these workshops before scheduling appointments.

Catastrophic leave donation program
Sacramento State employees may voluntarily donate to other employees up to a maximum of 40 hours of sick or vacation leave credits in one-hour increments each fiscal year. Bargaining Units 1, 8, 10 and 11 may donate only up to 16 hours per fiscal year. If employees are interested in donating time, a form can be obtained at www.csus.edu/hr/forms.htm#Disability, or visit the Human Resources Disability Leaves office in Sacramento Hall 162 or call 278-3522.
