NCAA certification of university athletics
Sacramento State is preparing for a visit from the site visit team of NCAA Division I commitment on Athletics as part of the University’s second cycle of certification of its intercollegiate athletics program. The site visit team is drawn from a pool of college presidents, athletics administrators, faculty athletics representatives, and conference administrators.

The certification process is meant to ensure the NCAA’s fundamental commitment to integrity in intercollegiate athletics. The process involved in the second cycle of certification is expected to run through the academic calendar year and will culminate with a decision regarding certification status.

Sacramento State began its second cycle of certification in the summer of 2005, developing a 141-page self-study report. The self-study is a broad-based review of the program covering governance and commitment to rules compliance, academic integrity, and equity and student-athlete welfare. The on-campus 22-member steering committee responsible for our self-study was created to provide broad-based participation in the self-study process and included faculty, staff, students, alumni, and other members of the Sacramento State community.

The NCAA site visit team will be on campus on Nov. 8 and 9.

Staff Recognition Program nominees to begin anew
The President’s Office has announced that California State University, Sacramento is continuing the Staff Employee Recognition Program. The campus community has been participating in the Employee Recognition Program since September 2004. Over the past two years, many outstanding individuals were nominated and 28 have received recognition as employees of the quarter.

This quarter begins a new group of nominees. All nominations will be treated confidentially and will remain a part of the pool until either the individual is selected or until July 31, 2007. It is anticipated that between two and four staff will be recognized each quarter. Details regarding eligibility and nomination criteria are available at: www.csus.edu/president/staffrec/index.stm.

The benefits of being honored by the Staff Employee Recognition Program include: a reserved parking space for the quarter in one of several lots (employee’s choice); a congratulatory letter from the President; an award certificate; and an article with a photograph on the University’s website.

Nominations may be sent immediately. The final date of submission for this quarter is Nov. 16. The final selections will be announced in December.

STEM Scholars Lecture
Sacramento State’s Center for STEM Excellence will be hosting its inaugural STEM Scholars Lecture on Tuesday Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the University Union Redwood Room. The STEM Scholars Lecture Series is the avenue for Sacramento State’s science, technology, engineering, and mathematics faculty and student scholars to share their research with the Sacramento Community.

The featured speaker will be Professor Lisa Hammersley from the Department of Geology. Her talk is titled, “Volcanoes in our backyard? A geochemical and geophysical study of the potential for future eruptions at Clear Lake, CA.”

Holocaust survivor speaks on campus
David Faber, Holocaust survivor and author of Because of Romek: A Holocaust Survivor’s Memoir, will share his experiences with the campus community on Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in University Union Ballroom III. Estate planning seminar
Kelly Brothers will hold a free seminar titled, “Essentials of Estate Planning” on Oct. 13, 20 and 24 from 9 to 11 a.m. in the University Union Lobby Suite. The seminar will focus on security at retirement, paying for children’s education, preservation of assets at death and the importance of proper estate planning and avoiding traditional pitfalls.

Book tour at Sacramento State
Author Simon Winchester, whose book A Crack in the Edge of the World: America and the Great California Earthquake of 1906 offers a panoramic blend of history and science at the 100-year anniversary of the 1906 earthquake, will be speaking and signing books at Sacramento State on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. in the Hornet Bookstore.

Patricia served as Director of the Office of Services to Students with Disabilities at Sacramento State for 31 years. Lecture and exhibit about art from Japanese American Internment Campus
Delphine Hirasuna will give a lecture on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 3:30 p.m. in the University Union Hinde Auditorium about her book Art of Gaman, Arts and Crafts from the Japanese American Internment Camps, 1942-1946. The lecture will follow the presentation of an exhibit featuring artifacts from the book on display in the Department of Special Collections and University Archives in the Library. A question and answer session will follow the lecture.

Visiting scholar to lecture on Mexican issues
Visiting scholar Alejandro Alvarez, global economist and author from the National University of Mexico (UNAM), will give a lecture titled, “What’s Going on in Mexico?” on Monday, Oct. 30 at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. in University Union Ballroom. Alvarez will speak about Mexico's contested national elections, the Oaxaca teachers strike, globalization and NAFTA, US-Mexico relations, and the international artist Rini Templeton.

The event is free and will include a question and answer session. Co-sponsors include the Center for Teaching and Learning, Bilingual Multicultural Education Dept., the Multicultural Center and the Serna Center, MECHA, Ethnic Studies, Sacramento Progressive Alliance and CFA.

Welcome fall with the Harvest Buffet
A buffet with a Harvest theme will be hosted by the University Center Restaurant on Oct. 18 and 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The buffet will include butternut squash soup, apple cinnamon pork roast, chicken in sun-dried tomato pesto cream sauce, grilled bratwurst, assorted quick breads, vegetables, grilled polenta and salads. Desserts include vanilla ice cream, cake or sweet potato pie. The cost is $11.95 per person, beverages additional. Construction update
The Infrastructure II utilities upgrade project continues in various locations. Site preparation for the installation of a 35,000 gallon sewage storage tank across the street from Parking Structure I is in progress. Traffic in both directions on State University West will be maintained; however, lanes will shift due to construction activities. Access to the faculty and staff section of Parking Structure I will be modified during construction. Entrance and exit will be restricted to northbound traffic only. Student access will not be affected. Construction in this area is scheduled for approximately six months. Alternate routes for pedestrians and bikes will be available.

Work on the steam and chilled water pipe installation may at times disrupt pedestrian/service traffic along Sinclair Road. Detours will be available.

Fire alarm system improvements continue in the Sequoia, Amador, and Capistrano buildings. Work will mainly be conducted after hours. Work notices will be posted in the building.

Trucks will be entering/exiting State University Drive West to access the bicycle path project site. A temporary pedestrian pathway is open south of the baseball field. Pedestrians entering campus through the Hornet Tunnel should proceed across State University Drive West then north on the asphalt path to the temporary east/west path. Work south of the bus stop at the Esplanade is in progress.

Catastrophic Leave Donation Program
Sacramento State employees may voluntarily donate to other employees up to a maximum of 16 hours of sick or vacation leave credits each fiscal year in one-hour increments. CSUEU, MPP, Unit 4, Unit 6 and Confidential employees may donate up to a maximum of 40 hours per fiscal year.

If employees are interested in donating time, a donation form can be obtained by going to www.csus.edu/hr/forms.stm#Disability, or by visiting the Human Resources, Disability Leaves Office in Sacramento Hall 162, or by calling 278-3522.
