Sacramento Business Review's forecast is upbeat
The Sacramento region's economy is improving at a modest but steady pace. That's just one of many findings in the midyear update of Sacramento Business Review, published by Sacramento State's College of Business Administration and the Chartered Financial Analyst Society of Sacramento. The report is "the only local publication focusing on the economy and financial strength of the Sacramento region, and how it is affected by national and international trends," says Business Dean Sanjay Varshney. Our summary includes a sector-by-sector analysis and a link to the full report.

Filmmaker returns in triumph to where his 'path' began
As a Sac State football star, Ryan Coogler's business was receptions. Now, the art and business of filmmaking are propelling the 2007 alumnus to national fame. The director's feature-length debut, Fruitvale Station, scored big at Sundance and Cannes, and is in theaters nationwide. Coogler returned this month to the University for a visit and, later, a special screening of the powerhouse drama. Coogler's next big reception may well come when his movie hauls in an Academy Award. | Coogler's visit in photos

Helping students succeed: A $250,000 grant from the CSU Chancellor’s Office will help improve access and retention efforts for underrepresented students. The Dedicated to Educating, Graduating and Retaining Educational Equity Students (DEGREES) project dovetails with the CSU’s Graduation Initiative.

Public policy partners:
Students in Sac State's Public Policy and Administration (PPA) program are getting hands-on experience providing analysis and developing programs for Yolo County. In the past two years, PPA students produced 10 class-based projects and five theses for the county.

Tender triumph: Following a devastating stroke three years ago, Don Fields was told he had little chance of living a quality life, much less of dancing with his daughter Eva at her wedding. With the help of Sac State grad students, Fields overcame those long odds to enjoy one of the most precious father-daughter moments.
