What services does the ResLink Helpdesk offer?
The ResLink Helpdesk offers support for residents in accessing the Res Halls wired and wireless networks along with offering basic support for day to day questions in the use of computers and software. The Helpdesk also offers tutorials on installing anti-virus and anti-malware software and works with the IT Service Desk in offering hands-on how to clinics (link at left).

The Helpdesk does not offer support for software or hardware installation.

Can I use a router in my room?
Having a router in your room is allowed, having wireless enabled on these devices is prohibited. If you have a router capable of broadcasting a wireless signal you need to disable the wireless on it. Please look at your specific router instructions for how to do this or contact the ResLink Help Desk at (916) 278-2555, reslink@csus.edu.

Can I connect more than 2 devices to the internet simultaneously?
Yes, please review the previous question.

If I use a router do I still need to register my gaming devices with ResLink?
No. You will connect both your workstation and gaming console to your router. To authorize your router for full Internet access simply sign on by opening a unaffiliated campus website in your web browser on the connected workstation. Sign on using your SacLink loginID and password. Both your gaming console and workstation will now be authorized for full Internet access.

Should I get a laptop or a desktop?
Laptops are generally more useful to students. It is mobile and allows you to use it in a variety of different ways, such as classrooms, labs, common areas and study groups. However, depending on your needs or circumstances a desktop may also be a good choice as well. One thing to keep in mind regardless of your choice is that computers are theft targets. If you purchase a computer, you should invest in a cable or similar lock for it.

I have 2 jacks in my room, which one do I use for my internet?
If you are living in Draper, Jenkins, Sutter or Sierra hall you will want to use the gray jack. If you are located in Desmond then you will want to use the jack labeled “data”.

Is there wireless network service in the residence halls?
Wireless is offered in all the first floor common areas of the residence halls. These common areas consist of the recreation rooms, 1st floor study rooms, quad and Dining Commons. Wireless is also available in the entire American River Courtyard. For further information regarding campus wireless network services.

Am I allowed to use p2p (peer-2-peer) applications such as Kazaa, Gnutella, Limewire, etc.?
While the use of such applications is not prohibited, the sharing of copyright materials is prohibited. Please view the AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) for further clarification on this issue. Please be aware that peer to peer networks use a very large amount of bandwidth. Bandwidth in the residence halls is a limited resource. Please respect others you are sharing the Internet connection with and throttle your bandwidth usage.

Can I share my collection of movies/songs/pictures with others in the Residence Halls?
While sharing files, printers, etc. with others over the Residence hall network is allowed the sharing of copyrighted materials with anyone is completely prohibited and against the law. Please view the AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) for further clarification on this issue.

I am getting a message saying that my computer is infected and I cannot use the Internet, how do I restore full Internet access?
Make sure you run all of your Windows updates and have an anti-virus scanner that has the latest definitions installed. Then contact the ResLink Help Desk about having your Internet access restored, (916) 278-2555. Please visit the IRT website for additional desktop security measures.

Where can I get a good anti-virus scanner?
No need to look any further! As a Sacramento State student you are entitled to McAfee Virus Scan (PC) and/or McAfee Virex (Mac) for free. Simply visit the software download site to get your copy.

How can I check my SacLink email?
Please visit Web Access, when prompted for a user name and password simply put in your SacLink ID and password. You can use this address to check your SacLink email both on and off campus.

Where can I purchase Ethernet/Coax cable?
Ethernet cables are available for purchase from the bookstore in different lengths to fit the needs and setup of your residence hall room.
