Mission

The Career Center provides proactive and comprehensive career services to students through career development, experiential learning, resume development, on-campus recruitment and employer networking. The professional staff provides events, workshops and career counseling to our diverse student population, and partners with employers who value performance in an inclusive environment.

Melissa Aguirre

Melissa Aguirre is the Recruitment Program Assistant at Sacramento State Academic Advising and Career Center. Melissa is currently working on her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at Sacramento State. Melissa was born and raised in the Sacramento area. She enjoys helping others and working with children. She has traveled to Sinaloa, Mexico to volunteer at an orphanage where she coordinated experiential learning activities for the children. She has also tutored and mentored at-risk youth at Will C. Wood Middle School in Vacaville. Furthermore she also loves volunteering as a Girl Scout Leader, where she teaches the girls leadership skills, decision-making and planning skills for the future. Melissa also loves being involved on campus and is currently a member of a few organizations.

Cein graduated from the University of New Mexico with her B.A. in Mass Communications and Journalism with an emphasis on Public Relations. Upon graduation Cein worked as an event planner and marketing coordinator for an independent bookstore in Albuquerque before returning to California to work for In-N-Out Burger as a Staffing Specialist. Cein spent two and a half years with In-N-Out Burger recruiting Associates for new and existing restaurants throughout California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Texas. She was also responsible for assisting in the recruitment of Support Associates. It was through her experience as a recruiter and her time volunteering as a job coach that Cein discovered her passion for assisting others as they work towards achieving their career goals. Cein was born in the Seychelles Islands and speaks Seychellois Creole, and when not at work she enjoys boating, travelling, reading and volunteering.

Candace is originally from Lodi, CA and has lived in Sacramento for the past 18 years. She earned both her Bachelor’s degree in Ethnic Studies and her Master’s in Higher Education Leadership at Sacramento State. She manages the Internship Program and provides academic advising to first year students. She has a passion for working with students, believes that students can achieve anything they set their minds to through hard work, and encourages students to look at all options available to them. Candace loves being involved in the campus and is the advisor for Lambda Sigma Gamma. In her spare time, she helps coach the Rosemont High School Cheer Squad.

As a Career Counselor, David McVey provides comprehensive and professional career counseling services to a diverse student population. He has a Master of Science in Counselor Education from California State University, Sacramento with a specialization in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling,. David has extensive experience working with students who are in the process of choosing or changing their major and/or career path. He also works with students from all majors in the areas of preparation for professional and graduate programs, job search strategies, relating their majors to the work world, and interviewing techniques. In addition, David teaches students strategies for locating experiential learning opportunities including internships. David also coordinates the Career Tracks program, an intern training program for career counseling graduate students from Sacramento State’s Counselor Education Department. In addition, he enjoys playing guitar, cycling, mountaineering, hiking, and nutrition. David considers it important to support a diverse student population to be successful in pursuing their education and career goals and to assist all students toward achieving their dreams.

Shayla Walker is a Career Counselor and Experiential Learning Coordinator at the Sacramento State Academic Advising and Career Center. She graduated from Sacramento State University with her Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications and is currently pursuing her Master of Arts in Higher Education Leadership at Sacramento State. Shayla spent four years as an Admissions and Outreach Counselor at Sacramento State advising, recruiting, and providing resources to prospective students in the Sacramento, Contra Costa, Alameda, and Santa Clara counties. Through mentoring and advising students, she discovered her passion for connecting students to career related opportunities and goals. In her current role, she provides students with strategies for job searching and exploring majors, finding internship opportunities, and techniques for interviewing resume building. She also works closely with students from the College of Health and Human Services and the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies. Shayla was born and raised in San Jose, CA and she loves being a mentor for the Cooper-Woodson Enhancement Program on campus. She also enjoys karaoke, music, traveling, and watching movies.

Shannon Wells

Shannon Wells is a Career Counselor and Experiential Learning Coordinator at the Sacramento State Academic Advising and Career Center. She graduated from Sacramento State with her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and minored in Business Administration. Shannon continued her studies at Sacramento State and graduated with a Master of Science in Counseling specializing in Career Counseling. Her professional experience includes assisting students and community members with career development. In her current position, she assists students with a variety of career related needs including exploring majors, identifying internship opportunities, developing job search strategies, and learning resume writing and interviewing skills. While she advises students from all majors, her specific focus includes working with students from the College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics and the College of Education. Shannon is a native of Sacramento and enjoys being involved in her local community. Outside of work, she maintains an active and healthy lifestyle including reading, cooking, running and playing soccer.

From North - J Street Entrance

  • Take immediate right onto State University Drive North
  • Turn left at first stop sign into Parking Lot One
  • Park in an appropriately designated spot (make sure you have your permit visible on dashboard, and/or to purchase a daily permit as necessary)
  • Walk South toward Sacramento Hall (Lassen Hall is directly behind Sacramento Hall)
  • Career Center is located on the first floor of Lassen Hall, Room 1013

From South - Highway 50 Entrance

  • College town drive becomes State University Drive South
  • Stay on State University Drive until it wraps around to the north side of campus
  • Turn right at 2nd stop sign into Parking Lot One
  • Park in an appropriately designated spot (make sure you have your permit visible on dashboard, and/or to purchase a daily permit as necessary)
  • Walk South toward Sacramento Hall (Lassen Hall is directly behind Sacramento Hall)
  • Career Center is located on the first floor of Lassen Hall, Room 1013

Daily Parking Permits

Visitors to Sacramento State who do not have a parking permit may purchase a one day use permit from machines conveniently located around campus. These permits cost $6.00 per day.
