Mission and Goals

The Career Center provides proactive and comprehensive career services to students through: career development, experiential learning, on-campus recruitment and employer relations. The professional staff creates a supportive and educational environment where students can actively participate in their own career development within the global work world.

Melissa Aguirre, Recruitment Program Assistant

Melissa Aguirre is the Recruitment Program Assistant at Sacramento State Academic Advising and Career Center. Melissa is currently working on her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at Sacramento State. Melissa was born and raised in the Sacramento area. She enjoys helping others and working with children. She has traveled to Sinaloa, Mexico to volunteer at an orphanage where she coordinated experiential learning activities for the children. She has also tutored and mentored at-risk youth at Will C. Wood Middle School. Furthermore she also loves volunteering as a Girl Scout Leader, where she teaches the girls leadership skills, decision-making and planning skills for the future. Melissa also loves being involved on campus and is currently a member of a few organizations.

Cein graduated from the University of New Mexico with her B.A. in Mass Communications and Journalism with an emphasis on Public Relations. Upon graduation Cein worked as an event planner and marketing coordinator for an independent bookstore in Albuquerque before returning to California to work for In-N-Out Burger as a Staffing Specialist. Cein spent two and a half years with In-N-Out Burger recruiting Associates for new and existing restaurants throughout California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Texas. She was also responsible for assisting in the recruitment of Support Associates. It was through her experience as a recruiter and her time volunteering as a job coach that Cein discovered her passion for assisting others as they work towards achieving their career goals. Cein was born in the Seychelles Islands and speaks Seychellois Creole, when not at work she enjoys boating, travelling, reading and volunteering.

Audrey Harris, Career Counselor & Experiential Learning Coordinator: College of Engineering & Computer Sciences, College of Arts & Letters

Audrey Harris is a Career Counselor and Experiential Learning Coordinator at the Academic Advising and Career Center. Audrey earned her BA in Sociology with a minor in English from the University of Arizona. She continued her education and graduated with a Master of Science degree in Counseling, specializing in Career. Audrey is experienced in working with diverse populations and celebrates differences in learning styles, values, and life experiences. Prior to this position, Audrey has worked with EOP, the Guardian Scholars Program, and with clients through community agencies. She loves to help students discover their academic, career, and life passions through the career development and counseling process. She is also skilled in analyzing career related assessments, assisting with the internship and job search process, developing strategic cover letters and resumes, and conducting mock interviews to help more students and alumni create positive futures for themselves.  Audrey enjoys working with all students but will focus on developing experiential learning opportunities for the College of Engineering and Computer Sciences and Arts and Letters.

In her free time Audrey mentors students in the Guardian Scholars program, enjoys rock climbing, running, and spending time with her friends, family, and loved ones.

Candace is originally from Lodi, CA and has lived in Sacramento for the past 18 years. She earned both her Bachelor’s degree in Ethnic Studies and her Master’s in Higher Education Leadership at Sacramento State. She manages the Internship Program and provides academic advising to first year students. She has a passion for working with students and believes that anything is possible and encourages students to look at all options available to them. Candace loves being involved in the campus and is the advisor for Lambda Sigma Gamma. In her spare time, she helps coach the Rosemont High School Cheer Squad.

David McVey, Career Counselor

As a Career Counselor, David McVey provides comprehensive and professional career counseling services to a diverse student population. He has a Master of Science in Counselor Education, with a specialization in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling, from California State University, Sacramento. David has extensive experience working with students who are in the process of choosing or changing their major and/or career path. He also works with students from all majors in the areas of preparing students for professional and graduate programs, job search strategies, relating a student’s major to the world of work, and teaching students interviewing techniques. In addition, David teaches students strategies for locating experiential learning opportunities, including internships. David also coordinates the Career Tracks program, an intern training program for career counseling graduate students from Sacramento State’s Counselor Education Department. In addition, he enjoys playing his guitar, cycling, mountaineering, hiking, and nutrition. David considers it important to support a diverse student population to be successful in pursuing their education and career goals; assisting all students to achieve their dreams.

Jason Molay, Student Services & Training Coordinator; Government Jobs Liaison

Jason earned his BA in Communications from Southern Oregon University and his EdM in Educational Organization and Leadership from the University of Illinois. Jason is the Customer Service Representative for the office, and he supervises the front desk student assistants. In addition he assists students in both academic advising and career counseling. Prior to this position he was a Residence Life Coordinator for the Housing and Residential Life Department at Sacramento State. He is an avid Giants and 49ers fan, enjoys golf and taking his dog to the park.

James Tan, Office Coordinator

James earned his BA in Creative Writing from Seattle University. He is a former AmeriCorps volunteer, having worked as a volunteer recruiter for the American Red Cross and as an English tutor at Watsonville High School. He is currently working toward an MA in Creative Writing at Sac State. He enjoys reading, writing, traveling, and playing basketball, guitar and piano.

Shayla Walker is a Career Counselor and Experiential Learning Coordinator at the Sacramento State Academic Advising and Career Center. She graduated from Sacramento State University with her Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications and is currently pursuing her Master of Arts degree in Higher Education Leadership at Sacramento State. Shayla spent four years as an Admissions and Outreach Counselor at Sacramento State advising, recruiting, and providing resources to prospective students in the Sacramento, Contra Costa, Alameda, and Santa Clara counties. Through mentoring and advising students, she discovered her passion for connecting students to career related opportunities and goals. In her current role, she provides students with job search strategies, exploring majors, internship opportunities, interviewing and resume building techniques. She also works closely with students from the College of Health and Human Services and the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies. Shayla was born and raised in San Jose, CA and she loves being a mentor for the Cooper-Woodson Enhancement Program on campus. She also enjoys karaoke, music, traveling, and watching movies.

Shannon Wells is a Career Counselor and Experiential Learning Coordinator at the Sacramento State Academic Advising and Career Center. She graduated from Sacramento State University with her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and minor in Business Administration. Shannon continued her studies at Sacramento State University and graduated with a Master of Science in Counseling specializing in Career Counseling. Her professional experience includes assisting students and community members with career development. In her current position, she assists students with a variety of career related needs including exploring majors, identifying internship opportunities and job search strategies and techniques such as resume writing and interviewing skills. While she advises students from all majors, her specific focus includes working with students from the College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics and the College of Education. Shannon is a native of Sacramento having grown up in the greater Sacramento area and enjoys being involved in her local community.   • Walk South toward Sacramento Hall (Lassen Hall is directly behind Sacramento Hall)

Highway 50 Entrance

  • College town drive becomes State University Drive South
  • Stay on State University Drive until it wraps around to the north side of campus
  • Turn right at 2nd stop sign into parking lot One

Daily Parking Permits
Visitors to Sacramento State who do not have a parking permit may purchase a one day use permit from machines conveniently located around campus. These permits cost $6.00 per day.
