Sacramento State Sutter Volunteer Program

Sutter Hospital, working in collaboration with the Career Center, places approximately 100 Sacramento State students each spring in volunteer experiences. Students volunteer in a wide variety of locations where they get exposure to many of the different components of health care. To volunteer through this program, students should carefully review the timeline and specific instructions listed on this page.

Please note: this program only places students each spring.

Benefits of Volunteering:

  • It may be possible to gain internship units. Contact your major department to learn if the Sutter Volunteer Program is an eligible experience.
  • Gain valuable experience that may help you when applying to professional schools including nursing programs, medical schools, etc.
  • Become exposed to the diverse career opportunities in health care.

Things to Keep in Mind:

  • The Sutter Hospital Student Volunteer Program is for currently enrolled Sac State undergraduate and graduate students. Alumni are not eligible to participate.
  • Students who wish to participate will be required to show proof that they have received the necessary immunizations. For a list of immunizations required by Sutter, click here.
  • Most volunteer unit assignments are located at Sutter Memorial Hospital (SMH) or Sutter General Hospital (SGH). However, some assignments are at other Sutter Medical Center locations in the Sacramento area including: Sutter Oaks Midtown (SOMT), Midtown Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF), and Capitol Pavilion.
  • You will have to complete an assigned background check which is about $49.95 and purchase scrubs and a photo I.D. badge for around $15.00.
  • Please be aware that placement is not guaranteed.
  • If placed, you must attend Sutter’s On-site Orientation. On-time attendance is mandatory. You will be dropped from the program if you cannot attend this Orientation.
  • Prepare to commit 4 hours/week to volunteering for a total of 100 hours. Hours must be completed in the spring and summer of the year you are placed.

Sac State Sutter Volunteer Program- Timeline and Application Instructions

Note: This process will only be open to seniors and juniors who were on the wait list for the Saturday, November 3, 2012 Sutter Volunteer Orientation.

Step 1. Review the orientation PowerPoint and Important Information handout before submitting an application. Students will learn about the program and receive important information regarding the application process such as where to find application materials and instructions on completing the application.

Step 2. Completed application packets are due to the Career Center (Lassen Hall 1013) by 5 p.m. on Friday, January 25, 2013. We will only be accepting the first 50 applications!! There are 20 spots available. Incomplete or incorrect information will disqualify the applicant.

The "Student Information Sheet"in the application packet asks applicants to select their top 5 desired placements. Please choose preferred placements from the positions found below. While we will make every effort to give applicants their desired placements, the more options students list on their application the easier it is for us to place applicants. Students may also include in this section “Open to any available positions” as one of the 5 options. 

Step 3. On Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at 12:00 noon applicants will be notified what department they have been placed in.

Placed students must accept assignments by 12:00 noon on Thursday, January 31, 2013. Students will be required to submit a 500 minimum Letter of Purpose with their placement confirmation. If the student does not accept his/her placement by the deadline, it will be given to an alternate.


Step 4. All students with confirmed placements will be required to do the following:

You will have to complete an assigned online background check which is about $49.95 and turn in the Background Check Form to the Career Center in Lassen 1013 by 5 pm on Friday, February 8, 2013.


Step 5. Attend the mandatory Sutter On-site Orientation at 9 am on Saturday, February 16, 2013. Students who arrive more than 15 minutes late will not be admitted and will forfeit their placements.

Sutter Volunteer Program - Positions

Below are descriptions of the unit positions where volunteers can gain experience.

Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)
Neurospine

 

 

 

I

Position Title: Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Volunteer

Location: Sutter General Hospital 4 West

Services:

The Oncology Blood and Marrow Transplant unit is a busy 6-bed unit with a 3:1 nursing ratio.  This department is unique as the patients are post-transplant and acutely ill leukemia patients that may have a length of stay as long as 45 days in the hospital.  The patients do not leave the unit and all patient care is conducted at the bedside.  These patients can feel isolated from the outside world.  The volunteer will be heavily involved with the patients by assisting the staff with comfort measures for the patients.  Volunteers will have the opportunity to observe bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures, and stem cell transplants. 

Objective:

Volunteer will assist staff with providing comfort measures to patients, families, and visitors through the utilization of "rounding" with the patients and assisting staff with routine duties of the departments. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn professional and social interaction in a medical setting and to experience hands-on educational and real-life experiences.

Hours:

Monday - Sunday, 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Qualifications:

Friendly positive attitude. High degree of professionalism and maturity is essential in this position.  Possess compassion in dealing with seriously ill patients and their families.  Position interacts with physicians, patients, visitors, and staff; strong communication skills are critical.  Flexibility required for handling various tasks and circumstances that may arise. Artificial nails for patient care staff are prohibited due to infection control concerns.

Training:

Hospital orientation and specific departmental orientation.  Hand washing techniques.

Competencies:

  • Understanding and following directions from nursing staff

Responsibilities:

 

 

 


  • Round with patients
  • Provide comfort measures to patients and visitors as requested by RN
  • Visit patients to encourage them to sit up, read, walk in the hallways (if patients do not ambulate they can develop pneumonia, blood clots, or other life threatening complications)
  • Engage patients in games such as dominoes, cards, scrabble, etc.
  • Assist the patient with correspondence via e-mail, cards, or letters
  • Stock supplies
  • Assist staff with transports and discharges
  • Answer call lights, attend to patient’s personal needs not requiring hands-on care, keeping staff informed of the needs
  • Lab runs
  • Answer phones
  • Assemble admission and education packets
  • Prepare wash clothes and pass meal trays to patients
  • Comply with hand hygiene procedures
  • Disinfect wheelchairs and other equipment as needed
  • Report to charge nurse for any additional tasks
  • Can observe staff reporting during shift change

Position Title: Sutter Oaks Midtown (SNF) Volunteer-

Location: Sutter Oaks Midtown Skilled Nursing Facility

Service:

Midtown is a busy 100 bed Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) located at 26th and L Streets. Patients range in age from 21-101. The first floor consists of 66 long-term beds and the second floor holds 34 short-term beds. Volunteers will assist staff by providing comfort measures to the patient by assisting with daily activities that are necessary to run the facility.

Objective:

Volunteer will assist staff with providing comfort measures to patients, families, and visitors through the utilization of "rounding" with the patients and assisting staff with routine duties of the departments. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn professional and social interaction in a medical setting and to experience hands on educational and real-life experiences.

Hours: Monday-Sunday, 9:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m.

Qualifications:

Friendly positive attitude. Works well with patients, staff and visitors.

Training:

Hospital orientation
Specific Department training approximately 1-2 hours before start of first shift any time Mon-Sun between the hours of 9am-4pm (only if volunteer’s hours do not fall between these times)

Competencies:

  • Confidentiality

Responsibilities:

DAILY RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES (twice/day @ 10am and 1pm lasting approx. 1 ½ hours)

  • Assist the staff during activities time with: bingo, cards, games, range of motion activities and pet therapy
  • Help set up/clean up, serve refreshments, stock supplies

NURSING UNIT

  • Answering call lights
  • Keep patients company: read, visit
  • Stock supplies on the floor
  • Assist with daily pampering tasks such as rub lotion on hands and polish nails
  • Assist staff by making copies for daily activities
  • Volunteer will shadow Nurse Practitioner 1 shift per month

Position Title: Neurospine Volunteer

Location: Sutter General Hospital 4 East

Services:

Neurospine is an inpatient department with 33 beds, including the Neuro-Observation unit that services spine, stroke, and med/surgical patients. Volunteers will assist in helping to answer call lights, attend to Active Daily Living (ADL) needs, and provide overall support to patients.

Objective:

Volunteer will assist staff with providing comfort measures to patients, families, and visitors through the utilization of "rounding" with the patients and assisting staff with routine duties of the departments. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn professional and social interaction in a medical setting and to experience hands-on educational and real-life experiences.

Hours: Monday-Sunday, 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
Note: shift change occurs at 6:45 p.m., this is a busy time and a good opportunity for volunteers

Qualifications:

Friendly, positive and professional attitude.  Works well with patients, staff and visitors. Does not have an aversion to procedures and blood.  Ability to display compassion, and caring in a non-judgmental way. Artificial nails for patient care staff are prohibited due to infection control concerns.

Training:

Hospital orientation and specific departmental orientation. 

Competencies:

  • Phone Etiquette

Responsibilities:

  • Rounding with patients/staff and visitors (staff will provide a script)
  • Help with food trays temperature check, set-up and feedings
  • Restock supplies
  • Pass water to patients
  • Run errands to the lab and other areas of the hospital
  • Answer phones
  • Assist staff with charts, filing, copying
  • Answer call lights and communicate needs to nurse
  • Observe staff taking vital signs
  • Disinfect wheelchairs or other equipment needed by a staff member
  • Assist with discharge of patients
  • Go into Neuro-Observation unit and learn from staff how to read monitors
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Title: Orthopedics Volunteer

Location: Sutter General Hospital 4 North

Services:

This inpatient unit provides care for 34 patients which include patients who have had total hip, total knee, total shoulder and total ankle replacements. The unit also provides care for patients who have had various types of bone factures. Along with the orthopedic population that is served, the unit also provides care for patients with various medical issues.

Objective:

Volunteer will assist staff with providing comfort measures to patients, families, and visitors through the utilization of "rounding" with the patients and assisting staff with routine duties of the departments. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn professional and social interaction in a medical setting and to experience hands on educational and real-life experiences.

Hours: Monday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m.

Qualifications:

Friendly, positive and professional attitude.  Works well with patients, staff and visitors. Does not have an aversion to procedures and blood.  Ability to display compassion, and caring in a non-judgmental way. Artificial nails for patient care staff are prohibited due to infection control concerns.

Training:

Hospital orientation and specific departmental orientation.

  • Understanding and following direction
  • (Once trained to dept.) can act without waiting for instructions

Responsibilities:

  • Round with patients
  • Answer patient call lights
  • Set up patient trays
  • Assist patients with hand hygiene during meal time, pass warm washcloths
  • Pass water to patients
  • Stock supplies, carts, and blanket warmers
  • Assist unit secretary with breaking down patient charts and filing
  • Run errands to the Lab and Central Supply
  • Can assist staff with discharge of patients
  • Conduct follow-up discharge phone calls
  • May observe rehabilitative therapy sessions
  • Errands to cafeteria to assist staff with patient trays
  • Chart packs
  • Place lab results in front of charts
  • Refill charts with progress notes and order sheets
  • Copy Pneumococcal/Influenza protocol and put together
  • Assist patients with Closed circuit training system
  • Assist with room prep and set up

Volunteers are encouraged to let staff know what they would like to do and learn after they have been initially trained.

May need to train on a day that is not their scheduled day.

Position Title: Telemetry Volunteer

Location: Sutter General and Sutter Hospital

Services:

Telemetry is a 55 bed cardiovascular unit that cares for cardiac patients, open heart patients, medical cardiac patients and transplant patients. 5 East is a 16 bed cardiovascular unit with a primary focus on cardiac and vascular interventions. Volunteers are important team players to assist with meeting the needs of cardiac patients and their families.

Objective:

Volunteer will assist staff with providing comfort measures to patients, families, and visitors through the utilization of "rounding" with the patients and assisting staff with routine duties of the departments. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn professional and social interaction in a medical setting and to experience hands-on educational and real-life experiences.

Hours: Monday-Sunday, 12 p.m.-10 p.m.

Qualifications:

Friendly, positive and professional attitude.  Works well with patients, staff and visitors. Does not have an aversion to procedures and blood.  Ability to display compassion, and caring in a non-judgmental way. Artificial nails for patient care staff are prohibited due to infection control concerns.

Training:

Hospital orientation and specific departmental orientation.

Competencies:

  • Confidentiality/HIPPA
  • Phone etiquette

Responsibilities:

  • Assist staff with hourly rounds
  • Answer call Lights
  • Help with food trays (check of and passing)
  • Assist with feeding patients
  • Answer phones
  • Visit with patients- read or talk with them
  • Assist staff with ADL (assistance of daily living)
  • Stock supplies
  • Assist unit secretary with breaking down patient charts and filing
  • Run errands to the Lab and Central Supply
  • Pass water to patients
  • Can assist RN with discharge of patients
  • Assist with transports to Diagnostic Imaging, ED and Cath Lab
  • Tele box (electrode placement)
  • Assist with disinfecting equipment/wheelchair
  • May assist patients with meals per RN request
  • May observe bedside procedures (chest tubes) only with RN and MD approval
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Title: Valve Clinic Volunteer

Location: Sutter Memorial Hospital

Services:

Valve Clinic is a service that is offered out of the Advanced Heart Services department to support the hospital's TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement) program. Patient with aortic valve disorders are referred to the Valve Clinic by their primary physician to be seen in our clinic by our team of specialists for consideration of TAVR.

The patient population seen in the Valve Clinic is typically an elderly, frail patient population. Clinic time may include patient rooming, physical exams, lab work, EKG, echocardiography study, medication reconciliation and consultation with a cardiologist, a cardiac surgeon, and the Valve Coordinator.

Objectives:

The main priority of the volunteer is to assist the staff with providing comfort measures to patients, families, and visitors through the utilization of "rounding" with the patients and assisting staff with routine duties of the department. 

As a clinic, we will provide the volunteer opportunities for learning professional and social interaction in a medical setting and to experience hands-on (either directly or indirectly) educational and real-life learning experiences. 

Volunteers will have the opportunity (as appropriate) to observe a procedure and to meet
with an M.D. prior to the case to discuss in detail what will happen during the procedure.

Qualifications:

Friendly, positive, patient, and professional attitude.  Works well with elderly frail patients and their families/caregivers, as well as with hospital staff and physicians. Does not have an aversion to procedures and blood.  Ability to display compassion, and caring in a non-judgmental way. Artificial nails for patient care staff are prohibited due to infection control concerns.

Training:


Hospital orientation and specific departmental orientation.

Competencies:

  • Confidentiality/HIPPA
  • Phone etiquette

Responsibilities:

  • Escort visitors to various parts of the Hospital (Non-invasive cardiology, cath lab, HCHA, laboratory, cafeteria, etc.) via wheelchair
  • Round with patients
  • Provide comfort measures to patients and visitors as requested by RN
  • Act as liaison between department staff and families
  • Assist with stocking supplies
  • Answer phones as needed if staff (momentarily) steps away from desk
  • Assist staff with disinfecting wheelchairs, gurneys and other equipment
  • Pick up items from Central Supply when directed by staff
  • Compile patient procedure packets and make photocopies as needed
  • Meet with MD before a procedure and have the opportunity to observe a procedure
  • Other miscellaneous tasks as assigned
