Sutter Volunteer Program

Sutter Hospitals, working in collaboration with the Career Center place approximately 70 Sacramento State students each year in volunteer internships.  Students volunteer in a wide variety of locations where they get exposure to many of the different components of health care. This program involves a commitment to volunteer 4 hours a week for a total of 8o hours.

To volunteer through this program students will need to review the timeline and specific instructions listed on this page closely. The placement process always begins a few weeks before the semester with the Career Center Orientation. The Orientation date for the upcoming semester is listed in the timeline below.

Some benefits of being a volunteer intern include:

  • The possibility of gaining Biology 195 (Internship) units. To find out more, students should contact the Biology Department Office at (916) 278-6535 or visit Sequoia 202.
  • Valuable experience to help you be competitive if you are thinking about applying to professional schools including nursing programs, medical schools, etc.
  • Great exposure to the diverse career opportunities in health care.

Some elements to be aware of when applying to the program:

  • You will have to complete a background check that costs $49.95 and purchase scrubs and a photo I.D. badge that costs $15.00.
  • Please be aware that these positions fill up quickly and placements will be assigned on a first come/first serve basis at the Career Center Orientation. Therefore, students who attend the Career Center Orientation will have an advantage.
  • If placed, you will have to attend Sutter’s mandatory Site Orientation – please see timeline below. (You will be dropped from the program if you cannot attend this Orientation).
  • This involves a commitment of 4 hours once a week, and a total commitment of 80 hours of volunteer time.  The times are flexible depending on the departments’ needs.
