Computer Literacy and Competency

 All business majors and pre-majors are required to demonstrate his/her knowledge regarding the competency of the computer literacy prior to majoring in Business Administration and/or taking 100-level courses.  This requires a student to complete three courses including MIS 1 Word Processing (Word 2016); MIS 2 Spreadsheets (Excel 2016); and MIS 3 Presentation Graphics (PowerPoint 2016) or pass online project oriented challenge exams for MIS 1, MIS 2 and MIS 3.

MIS 1, 2, 3 Challenge Exam Information

Step 1: Sign-up for the challenge exam(s)

Go to the Bursar's Office located in Lassen Hall 1001.  Pay the non-refundable fee of $5.00 for a challenge exam of MIS 1, or MIS 2, or MIS 3.  A total of $15.00 charge is required for taking all three exams of MIS 1, MIS 2 and MIS 3.  Retain your receipt(s).

Step 2: Purchase the required access code from the Hornet Bookstore 

This access code will enable you to take MIS 1 challenge exam, and/or MIS 2 challenge, and/or MIS 3 challenge exam for Fall 2017.

Step 3: Register MyITLab

If you are NOT in MIS 1, 2 and 3, you will need a MyITLab account through the internet before the challenge exam dates.  Allow enough time for reviewing MyITLab course materials and preparing the challenge exam.

  1. Go to http://www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com   (MyITtLab URL for registration). 
  2. Select Student under Register (right hand side of the screen).
  3. Confirm you have the information needed, then click OK! Register now.
  4.  Enter choi56367 for Course ID to take MIS 1 challenge exam, or enter choi04305 for Course ID to take MIS 2 challenge exam, or enter choi43948 for Course ID to take MIS 3 challenge exam.  Click on Continue.
  5. Enter username and password to Create an Account. Be sure to use the same first name and last name as your user name for MyITLab as you have at the College of Business Administration (CBA), California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) in order to properly record your grade (pass/no pass) for the challenge exam.  Click on Continue.
  6. Select Access Code from Registration page and enter your access code.  Click on Continue.
  7. Select Go To My Courses from the You’re Done page.
  8. Select MIS 1 - Word Processing Fall 2017, or MIS 2 - Spreadsheets Fall 2017, or MIS 3 - Presentation Graphics Fall 2017 from My Course from Pearson page to start your work.
  9. Select Getting Started from left hand side menu, select Set Up MyITLab (on the top) to check your computer system requirements and enable Pop-Ups before taking course materials.

Sign in after Registration

  1. Go to http://www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com  
  2. Select Sign In.
  3. Enter your Pearson account username, password, and select Sign In.
  4. Select MIS 1- Word Processing Fall 2017, or MIS 2 - Spreadsheets Fall 2017, or MIS 3 - Presentation Graphics Fall 2017 from My Course from Pearson page to start your work.
  5. Select Getting Started from left hand side menu, select Set Up MyITLab (on the top) to check your computer system requirements and enable Pop-Ups before taking course materials.

Enroll in another class

  1. Go to http://www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com  
  2. Select Sign In.
  3. Enter your Pearson account username, password, and select Sign In.
  4. Select Enroll in a Course.  Enter choi56367 for Course ID to add MIS 1, or enter choi04305 for Course ID to add MIS 2, or enter choi43948 for Course ID to add MIS 3.  Click on Continue.

MyITLab support

  1. Go to http://www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com 
  2. Select Support under Students > to get needed MyITLab technical support.

Step 4: Take challenge exam(s)

  1. Go to the designated computer lab (Tahoe 1009) 10 minutes before the scheduled time (on your receipt) for taking the challenge exam.
  2. Wait for challenge exam proctor to allow you entering the computer lab.
  3. Show your student ID and give the receipt to the challenge exam proctor.
  4. Select a computer and start the Firefox and Chrome to sign in using MyITLab web site http://www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com, your MyITLab username, and password.
  5. Select your course name: MIS 1 - Word Processing Fall 2017 for taking MIS 1 challenge exam, or MIS 2 - Spreadsheets Fall 2017 for taking MIS 2 challenge exam, or MIS 3 - Presentation Graphics Fall 2017 for taking MIS 3 challenge exam from My Course from Pearson page.
  6. Select Course Materials in the left hand side menu.
  7. Select Word Processing Capstone Project for MIS 1 challenge exam, or select Spreadsheets Capstone Project for MIS 2 challenge exam, or select PowerPoint Capstone Project for MIS 3 challenge exam.
  8. The exam proctor will provide you exam question sheets and a password to take the capstone project on the exam date.
  9. Figure 1 lists the 4 steps to start and complete the challenge exam.

  1. Select Download Materials to download files for working the capstone project in live Word for Word Processing Capstone Project, or in live Excel for Spreadsheets Capstone Project, or in live PowerPoint for PowerPoint Capstone Project.
  2. Select Preview Steps for following the instructional steps to finish the capstone project.
  3. Go back to Word Processing Capstone Project, or to Spreadsheets Capstone Project, or to PowerPoint Capstone Project after completing the corresponding capstone project.
  4. Select Choose File.. to select the file containing your completed capstone project from your flash drive or computer lab hard drive.
  5. Select Submit for Grading.
  6. You only have exactly one hour (starting time is printed on the challenge exam receipt) for completing a capstone project.  You have to leave the computer lab regardless whether you have completed your capstone project of the challenge exam when the challenge exam proctor informs the time is up.  Therefore, you need to be on time as printed on your receipt for the challenge exam.  There is no extended time if you are late.

MIS 1,2, 3 Challege Exam Grading Information

  1. A student will receive a no pass for the challenge exam if the student does not follow the challenge exam proctor’s instruction to leave the computer lab and/or violate any regulation as stated in the following regulation section.
  2. A student will receive a pass for the challenge exam if the capstone project score is 70 points or higher. 
  3. A student will receive a no pass for the challenge exam if the capstone project score is less than 70 points. 
  4. Every uploaded capstone project file is tagged, so if any content of the file is copied from someone else, the MyITLab grading system will flag it as an “integrity violation” which means a no pass will be assigned to the corresponding challenge.


MIS 1, 2, 3 Challenge Exam Regulation

Students must observe the following regulations to have a proper exam environment in the computer lab for other students.

  1. Show your student ID and give the receipt to the exam proctor before entering the computer lab.
  2. Turn off cell phone, pager and any electronic equipment.
  3. A receipt is only good for the specific challenge exam date and time.
  4. There is no refund if a student cannot make on the specific challenge exam date.
  5. No lap-top computer or other personal computer is allowed.
  6. No chatting, discussing, e-mailing or taking photo via any electronic device is allowed during the challenge exam.
  7. No book or note is allowed during the challenge exam.
  8. Absolute quiet, no eating and/or drinking is allowed during the challenge exam.

A student violating any of the above regulations will be asked to leave the computer lab and receive a no pass for the corresponding exam.


Preparing for MIS 1, 2, 3 Challenge Exam

It is highly recommended to study the MyITLab course materials (chapter topics, Simulation Training and Simulation Exam) included in MIS 1, and/or MIS 2 and/or MIS 3 before taking challenge exams.  Followings are a list of steps for studying the MyITLab course materials.

  1. After Go to www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com.
  2. Select Sign In.
  3. Enter your Pearson account username and password, and select Sign In.
  4. Select your course name: MIS 1 - Word Processing Fall 2017, or MIS 2 - Spreadsheets Fall 2017, or MIS 3 - Presentation Graphics Fall 2017 from My Course from Pearson page to start your work.
  5. Select Getting Started from left hand side menu, select Set Up MyITLab (on the top) to check your computer system requirements and enable Pop-Ups before taking course materials.
  6.  Course Materials are ordered by Chapter Folders.  
  7. Select a Chapter to open its assignments that include the e-text for the chapter (reading), Audio PowerPoint Presentation (listening), Student Videos (watching), Simulation Training (practicing with learning aids) and Simulation Exam (practicing without learning aids).
  8. Select Simulation Training to complete tasks stated in the lower left hand side.   Figure 2 illustrates functions provided by Learning Aids (lower part of right hand side after selecting Simulation Training).  Click on the down arrow (right hand side of the Learning Aids) to view the popup menu that has Read Instructions (e-text page to read), Watch video (video to show steps), and Practice (walking you through how to do steps).  Select Save button for later continuation.  Select Submit after completing the entire Simulation Training.
  9. Every chapter has a Simulation Exam at the bottom of the chapter.  The Simulation Exam is just like Simulation Training.  But, the Simulation Exam does not provide you any Learning Aid.  The Simulation Exam is testing your knowledge of the chapter.
