University Community Engagement Initiatives
Sacramento State has focused on Community Engagement through Strategic Plan, WASC, City of Sacramento partnership, and the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification. Community Engagement Center and the Advisory Committee will serve a cross section of the University and Community to make recommendations to University with regard to Community Engagement.
Defining Community Engagement:
The campus is in need of shared definition of Community Engagement in order to seek Carnegie Classification; track engagement efforts across the campus by faculty, students and staff; seek research and grant funding, spotlight University programs for National recognition in President’s Community Service Honor Role; showcase local impact in Sacramento region; highlight student learning through assessment; and prepare for re-accreditation with WASC.
The broad definition of Community Engagement differs at every level.
- National/Federal – Focuses on higher level institution that started with the Service Learning programs. Today, it consists of both community and civic engagement components.
- CSU – Many different levels of participation in the CSU system that started with service learning offices. Some CSU campuses, such as CSU Monterey, are campus wide initiatives where every student does some form of community engagement before they graduate.
