Service Learning

Enrollment:

  • 2006-2007: 1906 students
  • 2007-2008: 2065 students
  • 2008-2009: 2658 students

Alternative Break

Two team leaders are assigned daily to allow students to take leadership roles

Participation:

  • Spring 2007: 18 students
  • Winter 2009: 48 students
  • Spring 2008: 37 students
  • Winter 2009: 44 students
  • Spring 2009: 73 students

Writing Partners

Exchanging letters with elementary students through a mentorship program

  • 2005: 3 courses with 70 students
  • 2006: 3 courses with 75 students
  • 2007: 9 courses with 214 students
  • 2008: 12 courses with students

One Book

“When the Emperor Was Divine” by Julie Otsuka.

Students in Service

Physical Therapy and Social Work students.

  • 2007-2008: Federal government provided $ 150,000 to 93 students.

Faculty Fellows

Update on Community Engagement Center Faculty Fellows Program.

  • 15 faculty from 5 colleges.
  • Ideas include: Cohort of people working together, monetary award, be a liaison to their department, need common structure and support, etc.

Grants

Grants Community Engagement Center is seeking.

Chancellor’s Office

Town Hall meeting ($1500)

  • For 3 years
  • Safety net program for support

Learn and Serve Grant ($15,000 to $20,000 annually for 3 years)

Student Leadership ($5000-Sac State chosen 1 of 6 campuses to apply)

  • Develop a leadership program as a representative for community and university
  • Could start with Alternative Break and Students in Service students and develop to grow

California Campus Compact National Science Foundation Fellows Program

Section to fund faculty advisors.

National Education Association grant for Leadership

Defining Community Engagement

Need a shared definition

Identifying Sac State Community Engagement

Research, grants, etc.

Community Partnership

  • Need more collaborative efforts to share practices
  • Need long-term sustainability to support students and community partners
  • Goal of subcommittee is to provide tools of common practices

Assessment

Need to know how to: access student’s learning, connect with community, create framework (with what we need to do and starting with the 9 common goals).

Conclusion

Next Advisory Committee meeting: August 20 or September 11.
