
Through Alternative Breaks Sac State students provide much needed service to diverse communities, while building skills and great friendships. It’s also a excellent way to break out and see new places, people, and perspectives.
Alternative Break - Spring 2009: March 30 - April 3
73 Sac State students volunteered in the following projects:
- Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services organizing food and clothing donations at the SACA Center
- St. John's Shelter for Women and Children organizing donations and interacting with residents
- Center for Land Based Learning working on a farm and participating in a owl survey
- Habitat for Humanity digging and preparing foundations for single family homes
Alternative Break - Winter 2009: January 19 - 23
44 Sac State students volunteered in the following projects:
- Martin Luther King Junior Day of Service at Jedediah Smith Elementary painting playground and helping teachers organize materials and activities in the classroom
- Sacramento Tree Foundation NeighborWoods program planting trees near 6th and Fruitridge
- Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services organizing food and clothing donations
- Volunteer for America working outside on a beautification project at a home for former foster youth
Alternative Break - Spring 2008: March 31 - April 4
37 Sac State students volunteered in the following projects:
- Cesar Chavez Day of Service at the Washington Neighborhood Center spring cleaning and gardening
- American River Parkway Foundation building fences to protect oak saplings from being eaten by deer
- Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services working on a community garden and organizing food and clothing donations
- Habitat for Humanity digging foundations to new homes in Oak Park
Alternative Break - Winter 2008: January 21 - 25
48 Sac State students volunteered in the following projects:
- Martin Luther King Junior Day of Service painting a mural at a local elementary school in Del Paso Heights
- Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services organizing clothing and food donations
- Sacramento Tree Foundation pruning trees at Granite Regional Park
- Habitat for Humanity working in the ReStore warehouse
Alternative Break - Spring 2007: March 28 - 31
18 Sac State students volunteered through Alternative Break on projects with Habitat for Humanity. They worked at four sites throughout neighborhoods in Oak Park in landscaping, site clean up and a variety of beautification projects.
