Community Engagement Faculty Fellowship

Faculty Fellows work to further community engagement opportunities within individual courses, help expand the University’s and community’s awareness of community engagement activities at the University and facilitate research on community engagement efforts across the University.

Community Engagement Center established this new program through financial support received from a University Enterprises Inc. Project Activity Grant and funding from Research Administration and Contract Administration.

Objectives of Faculty Fellows

In keeping with Sacramento State University Strategic Plan Priority #5, which includes the goal to “enhance the institution’s connection to the region,” the Community Engagement Faculty Cohort will operate under the assumption that “We have a tremendous opportunity and the potential to be a full and active partner in regional social, cultural and economic development.” Objectives of the cohort include the following.

  1. Developing new community engagement courses and/or incorporating community engagement into current courses;
  2. Conducting assessment of student learning outcomes in community engagement courses and activities;
  3. Conducting community-based research on community engagement activities; and
  4. Providing a forum for presenting research on community engagement.

Benefits for Faculty Fellows Members

  1. Workshops (faculty cohort members may attend or help facilitate these workshops);
  2. Assistance from the Community Engagement Center in making connections to community partners;
  3. One subscription to a journal and one book purchase for each cohort member to help provide background research on community engagement;
  4. Payment of the registration fee (up to $400) for attendance at one community engagement focused conference;
  5. Conference in May 2010 that will allow faculty, students, community members, and/or teams of researchers to present their community engagement research.

Requirements for Faculty Fellows Members

  1. Create a new community engagement course or incorporate community engagement into a current course (or reexamine any current courses that include community engagement);
  2. Attend or help facilitate one workshop in Spring 2009 and one on Fall 2009
  3. Attend two meetings per semester to share progress with fellow faculty cohort members;
  4. Present community-based research at the Sac State Community Engagement Conference in May 2010.
