Dr. Judy Judd

Dr. Judy Judd has been an influential force in the fields of Education and Child Development at Sacramento State and in the local community.  Teetering on the edge of her fortieth anniversary in education, Dr. Judd currently enjoys being a part-time Lecturer at Sacramento State where she is able to focus on something very dear to her, the students.

As a teacher, Dr. Judd hopes to introduce students to passion projects though community engagement. Her goal is to two fold; show individuals what’s possible and develop critical thinkers. Dr. Judd reminds students to not only provide the right answer but encourages dialogue and discussion on topics that arise in class. Upon leaving her course, she reminds students of their role as a child advocate, their duty to inform others about current issues, and their responsibility to continually critique existing practices.

Dr. Judd has been incorporating service learning into her curriculum before it was termed Service Learning. One course in particular, Child Development 132 - Fieldwork in Child Development, has consistently created a collaborative learning experience between the community, student, and curriculum. Students are encouraged to engage in discussion, presentation, and share their personal experiences to enrich the learning experience.
The longstanding impact on the community is one of the most impressive elements of Child Development 132. Every semester, 80 to 120 students serve 40 hours each at community partner sites throughout the Sacramento region. In spring and fall 2009, students in four sections of Dr. Judd’s Child Development 132 course contributed more than 6,000 hours of service through service learning.

In partnership with Community Engagement Center, Dr. Judd has cultivated strong relationships with local community organizations for service learning partnerships, including:  The Mind Institute (UCD), ASI Children’s Center, Child Life Specialist Program at Sutter Memorial Hospital, Project R.I.D.E., St. John’s Women’s Shelter, and Wellspring Women’s Center. Dr. Judy Judd received her Masters in Counseling from Sacramento State and Doctorate in International & Multicultural Education from University of San Francisco. After serving over 14 years as a Lecturer at Sacramento State, Dr. Judd announced her pending retirement from the University in Spring 2009.

Each year, more than two thousand Sacramento State students, faculty, staff, and alumni participate in programs and projects sponsored by Community Engagement Center. Programs such as Alternative Break, AmeriCorps Students in Service, Sac State Serves, and Service Learning fulfill our mission to facilitate learning and engagement by linking campus and community for mutual benefit. Through Spotlight, Community Engagement Center will highlight outstanding individuals and programs advancing community engagement in the Sacramento region.
