Areas of Research/Scholarly Activity

Social media technologies present both new opportunities for connection, as well as new tensions and conflicts in college classrooms. I am interested research related to patterns of reading, participation in social media, to assess which formats can cause students to feel most/least overwhelmed by the information deluge. So far, I am finding that that some people feel overwhelmed on platforms such as Facebook or e-readers, but not necessarily on platforms such as Twitter or YouTube.

Still, I have discovered that social media can foster important collaboration in college classrooms. My next endeavor is to move toward a more serious look at how Facebook and Twitter (Nurph, Present Online Now!, Twellow and Edmodo) can enhance communications and can be used to answer student questions beyond traditional email. My interest lies in the ongoing debate about the role social media should play in education. Advocates point out the benefits that social media provides for today's digital learners while critics call for regulation and for removing social media from classrooms. Finding a middle ground has become a challenge.
