Areas Research/Scholarly Activity


Dr. Deidre Sessoms is Professor in the College of Education and Interim Director of the Student Research Center at Sacramento State. In addition, she serves as Co-Director of the CSU Student Success Network: (http://csunetwork.edinsightscenter.org/). A former plant physiologist, Deidre’s PhD in science education informs her current work on STEM student success across the K-16 continuum. She has directed various student success efforts, including an HHMI funded undergraduate biology student success program for under-represented students at UC Davis; the First Year Experience Program at Sacramento State, and the K-12 Teaching Credential programs at Sacramento State. She advises numerous STEM education projects in the CSU, including the STAR Program (STEM Teacher and Researcher), the Preparing a New Generation of Teachers for California S.D. Bechtel, Jr. funded system-wide initiative, and Next Generation Science Standards implementation in teacher preparation. She has been the principal investigator or co-principal investigator for more than $5 million in STEM education projects funded by the National Science Foundation and other federal, state, and philanthropic organizations.
