By definition, cooperative education combines academic study with paid, supervised, and credit-earning work. In real-life application, it consists of a 4-way partnership between Co-op staff, faculty, a student, and an employer working together to provide a work-based learning experience which will significantly enhance the student's academic and career development. All partners have defined roles and responsibilities that contribute to the success of this endeavor.

The mission of the Cooperative Education Program is essential to, and reflected in, the California State University , Sacramento Strategic Plan.
