Job Title: Geographic Information Systems Technician - 2 Positions available
Duties: Under the direction of the Forest Habitat Conservation Planning Branch, the GIS Technician assists FHCP staff in a wide variety of projects. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Assist Research Analysts with digitizing, converting, entering and editing GIS and other spatial data, collecting GPS data, creating maps, and maintenance of spatial databases using ArcView, ArcInfo, and/or ArcGIS and Microsoft Office software in a Windows environment.
  • Collect, download and copy GIS data to incorporate into Region 2 GIS data library.
  • Operate and maintain a Dell personal computer (PC) system, laptop, large format Inkjet plotter, digitizer, scanner and printer.
  • Assist in the maintenance of laptops; troubleshoot laptop technical problems; conduct software and data backups and virus scans.
  • Fill data requests from staff and third parties.
  • Conduct GIS analysis and prepare maps and reports for internal staff and third-parties.
  • Provide technical GIS support to staff desiring to work with spatial data.
Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Either:
    Equivalent to completion of one year of college with a minimum of 6 semester hours in Computer Sciences, Geography or Natural Resources that includes Geographic Information Systems, or
  • One year experience with ArcView or ArcInfo software. Enrolled as a student at CSUS or American River College.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • The ideal candidate has experience using ArcView GIS and Microsoft Access in a Windows environment, and troubleshooting PC technical problems along with a strong working knowledge of cartographic principals, including but not limited to map elements and projections.
  • Practical experience operating and managing a GIS system is desirable.

  • Ability to work independently, initiate and follow through with project tasks.
  • Ability to communicate successfully with a wide variety of individuals, both verbally and in writing.
  • Successful candidate will be energetic, self-motivated, assertive and follow through with project tasks.
Salary: $1967.00 - $2232.00 / month dependent upon experience.
Deadline: No later than September 4, 2001
Hours per week: This is a 6-9 month position (maximum of 1500 hrs./yr.) with potential for extension. 1 Full time or 2 Part time positions.
