Job Title: Homework Assistant
Duties:
  • Set up Homework Center materials and supplies, e.g. penicls, dictionaries, etc.
  • Greets children warmly and assists them to sign in
  • Reminds children of library rules and hleps them follow these rules.
  • Helps students with their homework assignments by
    • locating library materials for assignmets
    • providing orientatoin to the library's computer catalog
    • helping students pratice spelling, math drills, cocabulary review, listening to them read, etc.
    • using supplementary materials to hlep students reinforce their skills, e.g., computer programs, flash cards, work sheets.
    • maintaining brief daily records of suject matter worked on my each student
    • asking students each day if they have something at home to read that evening; help those who don't to borrow something from the library.
  • Develop & prepare supplementary learning materials when appropriate commercial materials are not available
  • Share ideas for activities and materials that would help students
  • Attend initial orientation session(s) and additional training sessions as scheduled by Lead Homework Assistant, Library Supervisor, or other library staff
  • Advise Lead Homework Assistant when supplies are running low so more can be ordered
  • Under the direction of Lead Homework Assistant and Librarians, assists in planning and presenting special group activities and programs for students and their parents.
  • Homework Assistants consult with Lead Homework Assistants and Librarians in answering questions and dealing with situations which mar arise:
    • when needing help in locating library materials
    • when needing advice on preparing a project or activity
    • when students have not followed library rules or have displayed behavior problems
    • when they believe a student may be having learning difficulties
    • when someone needs to speak to a student's parents
Qualifications:
  • Enrolled in Teacher's Education at CSUS, courses in multicultural education
  • Basic knowledge of computers
  • Proficiency in reading and math
  • Proficiency in developing reading and math-related activities
  • Ability to speak and understand Spanish, Russian, or Southeast Asian language desirable
