Canvas Course Template

As you migrate to, or create new courses in our new learning management system, Canvas, consider starting with the CTL Canvas template!

Why might you want to start with this template?


• It is optimized for student engagement
• Accessibility and student success resources are pre-loaded!
• It is in alignment with quality standards for online learning such as Quality Matters.

How can it save me time?


• Customizable landing page to welcome your students is preloaded just add your info
• You don’t have to locate and post required accessibility links and search for basic university student success resources – we’ve done that for you!
• Sample module
provided as a guide can be used to organize content

How easy is the template easy to use?


• It takes only a few clicks to find it and load it into your course
Template items are customizable and removable – keep what you want, delete what you don’t
Brief directions for basic Canvas functions are embedded (in red italicized text)

How do I access the template?

  1. Log in to Canvas and click on the Commons link from the left-hand navigation menu.

  2. Un-check the “Show Public Resources” box to show only Sac State content.

  3. Look for the items titled CTL Canvas Template - there are multiple versions, including a 3-module version and a 16-week version, as well as the Start Here module which is based on Quality Matters standards and contains links to university-generic information on student services, technical support, and accessibility resources for students with disabilities.

  4. Click on the template you would like to use in your course. You will see a list of your current Canvas courses in the menu on the right-hand side. Check the box next to the title of the course you would like to import the template into, and click the Import into Course button.
