The Department of Design will be hosting its annual Spring Show on Wednesday, May 21, 2008. The event will showcase the labor of graduating seniors as well as undergraduate work in the study of Graphic Design, Interior Design and Photography. Please join us as we celebrate the creative process in the University Union Ballroom.

Graphic Content: Exposing the Process Behind Comic Art Storytelling
April 28 - May 9, 2008
A Lecture by Kazu Kibuishi will take place on April 29th, 6:30pm, in Sequoia Hall 301. Mr. Kibuishi will speak on the process of creating graphic novels. Kazu graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a degree in Film Studies. He works as a full-time comic book artist, and lives in Alhambra, California with his wife, and fellow comic book artist, Amy Kim Ganter. Kazu is the editor/contributor of the highly acclaimed Flight comic anthologies. He also is the author/illustrator of two original graphic novels, including Daisy Kutter: The Last Train (Viper Comics), and more recently, Amulet, Book 1: The Stonekeeper (Simon & Schuster).
An Exhibition of The Peck, an original graphic novel concept by Mario Estioko. Mr Estioko is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design in the Department of Design. Posing as a design educator by day, Mario's clandestine comic work has appeared in magazines and college newspapers nationally. This is his first foray into the graphic novel genre. The comic exhibition runs from April 28th-May 9th in the 4th Floor Design Gallery, Mariposa Hall.

An acclaimed artist and design legend, Malcolm Grear has permanently shaped the design world with his work, lecturing, writing, and teaching. Malcolm Grear Designers was founded in 1960 and has had more than 28 solo exhibitions in museums and galleries. Malcolm Grear taught at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1960 to 1998 where he received the Honorary Alumnus Award for “...professional achievements as an internationally acclaimed graphic designer [that] brought overwhelming recognition to Rhode Island School of Design’s Department of Graphic Design and its graduates.”
Grear has been awarded numerous national and international awards including five honorary doctorate degrees. He was selected by the National Associations of Schools of Art and Design, comprising 190 institutions, to receive the Citation for Distinguished Service in the Visual Arts. Grear continues to design, lecture and conduct design workshops throughout the country and will occasionally teach a graduate design course. Malcolm Grear has recently published the 2nd edition of his book, Inside|Outside: From the Basics to the Practice of Design.

Please join us Thursday night at Sac State for a lecture and exhibit
by Katherine McCoy of the Chicago Institute of Design. Her reception
begins at 5:30pm at the University Union Hinde Auditorium and the lecture
starts at 7:00pm. Her accompanying exhibition runs from March 7th-18th
in the Annex Gallery of the University Library Gallery. This Festival
of the Arts event is sponsored by the Sac State Department of Design
(916)278-3962.
Katherine McCoy is one of America's best-known design educators. She
spent 24 years as co-chair of the design department at Cranbrook Academy
of Art, which came to be recognized as one of the most innovative programs
in graphic design education. McCoy has created two- and three-dimensional
designs for such well-known brands as Xerox and Chrysler Corporation,
and along with her husband Mike, she received the Chrysler Award for
Innovation in Design. McCoy is a past president of the Industrial Designer's
Society of America and an elected member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale.
Her work has been displayed at the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum
in New York and the Pompidou Centre de Creation Industriale in Paris.
