Hometown: Ripon, California

Major: Government. Plans to graduate in Spring 2009

Background: Barba's family moved around before settling in Ripon. After high school, Barba attended two years of seminary school in Connecticut to fulfill his dream of becoming a priest, but discovered he might have another calling. He returned home to Ripon, attending community college as he adjusted to college life. "I was coming from a monastery-type environment with a life of silence, where I only spoke one hour out of the day." He transferred to Sacramento State in 2006, and soon got involved in campus life, getting elected to Associated Students, Inc. and joining the University Union board.

Influences: "I used all the mentors I could find. I would bounce my ideas off of my teachers in high school and they would give me wonderful feedback. I also talked to my pastor before seminary, my seminary director, my biology teacher and guitar teacher. Listening to them and getting their input is the number one thing."

Highlight: "Through my involvement in student government, I've realized that I am making a difference in the lives of my fellow students and I am contributing to fulfilling the Destination 2010 initiative on campus."

Proudest Accomplishment: Starting the Salsa Loca Club. After moving to Sacramento, he began dancing at Salsa clubs in midtown and decided to bring it to campus. The club draws as many as 50 students to its weekly meetings. "It is a great social outlet."

Destination: Had an internship at the Capitol for Summer 2008. Plans to work in government after graduation, specializing in international relations and using his Spanish language skills.
