Pamela Ames
Hometown: Hoopa Valley Reservation, Calif.
Major: Civil Engineering. Plans to graduate in Fall 2010.
Background: Lived on the Hoopa Valley Reservation in Humboldt County until she moved to Sacramento in the summer of 2005. Maintained a 4.14 GPA in high school while being the student body treasurer, taking advanced placement classes, playing three sports and working part time. Recipient of the Gates Millennium Scholarship. Attended the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation program at Sacramento State last summer. Involved in the MESA Engineering and Computer Science Program. Plays intramural basketball.
Influences: "The MESA program has definitely helped
me out a lot and my teachers have been great. They helped me get classes
and I made a lot of friends over the summer."
Highlight: "It's a nice campus. It reminds me of
home with all the wildlife and trees. I like the squirrels. I like my
math class and my teacher."
Proudest accomplishment: "Being able to stay away
from home. It's a lot different living in a big city rather than a small
town. Not many people leave the reservation and those who leave always
go back."
Destination: "I live in a rural area where there
are a lot of old buildings. I want to help rebuild the area."
