PROGRESS

Utilizing the best in teaching and learning technology

Goal: Support faculty as they evaluate, select and implement technology in support of their teaching and learning values and goals.

Progress:

  • Our faculty members continue to integrate technology into their teaching.  More than 1,000 are now using our learning management system to teach their courses, with some 20,000 students logging on each semester.
  • During the past eight years, more than 370 faculty members have participated in the summer Teaching Using Technology (TuT) workshop. The 2007 and 2008 TuT programs focused on meeting the federal, state and CSU accessibility requirements and incorporating “universal design” principles into teaching.
  • Through Academic Technology and Creative Services, group and one-on-one assistance is provided to faculty members seeking to explore new teaching modalities.
  • We continue to enable faculty members to explore, develop and implement multiple learning methods and avenues, through consultation, training, self-paced video/animated tutorials, and documentation.
  • In addition to WebCT, faculty members have integrated other academic technologies into their instruction, including: faculty web sites, Respondus (online exams), Flashlight (online surveys), iMEET (synchronous online communication), video production, and StudyMate/Toolbook (interactive learning modules).

Goal:
Continually improve classroom and information technology to keep pace with the changing expectations of the learning environment, culture, and society

Progress:

  • A strategic plan for campus-wide information technology is under development, with a key focus on the enhancement of support for teaching and learning.
  • The Academic Information Resource Center, which opened in 2005, now provides 24-hour student study areas and computer labs to hundreds of students daily.
  • Three new technology-enhanced classrooms have been created, using new standards for greater support of faculty/student use of technology. Plans are underway to add additional enhanced classrooms in the old bookstore, along with additional planning to renovate and upgrade existing campus classrooms.
  • A major upgrade and expansion of the campus wireless infrastructure has been completed, with plans for further enhancements already underway.
  • We continue to explore and research new technologies for potential use on campus, such as personal response systems (clickers), virtual and interactive classroom systems, and Smart Boards.

Goal:
Utilize technology to augment students' learning opportunities.

Progress:

  • Seating for individual and group study in the Academic Information Resource Center (AIRC) has been greatly expanded.
  • A laptop loan program now provides more than 100 computers for student use through locations in the AIRC, Library and Student Union. Students using those laptops can now access their files on the campus network.
  • A new Student Technology Center is planned for Fall 2008, providing workshops, training and support for student use of technology in their learning.
  • A new student web portal and e-mail system, providing a single point of access to multiple student services, will be unveiled in the Fall of 2008.
  • The University has increased the number of courses delivered using distance technologies. In Fall 2008, we will offer 46 televised courses, all of which will be video-streamed, and many of which will be broadcast over cable television. In addition, we will offer some 28 fully online courses and more than 50 courses using the hybrid/mixed-delivery model.
