Build a Welcoming Campus

Sacramento State’s beautiful campus draws more than 100,000 visitors per year in addition to its 28,000 students. We strive not only to increase the number of visitors to the University, but also to make visits as smooth, safe and enjoyable as possible. The objective of this element of Destination 2010 is to make our campus a source of regional pride, a place visited often and mentioned frequently and positively by a significant portion of the region’s population. Sacramento State will be a welcoming campus for visitors as well as for students, faculty and staff.

Through Destination 2010 we will build a welcoming campus by:

Developing beautiful and inviting grounds and facilities

Our campus will become "a place to visit." Sacramento State has long been known for its beauty, especially for its trees and attractive grounds. We are committed to making the campus even more visible and attractive. Access will become easier. The campus itself will be easier to navigate by car or on foot.

Goals:

  • Enhance the campus' beauty.
  • Make the campus easier to navigate for visitors.
  • Make parking easier.
  • Display courtesy, respect and responsiveness to all visitors.

We are committed to maintaining a very safe campus. Sacramento State is known for its excellence in public safety. Visitors will find the campus safe and secure. Our public safety officers are well-trained professionals who are responsive to the needs of the broader University community.

Goals:

  • Increase public-safety outreach and educational programs to the campus community.
  • Implement a “problem-oriented” policing program.

PROGRESS

Becoming a regional event destination

Sacramento State will expand its role as a cultural resource for the region. The University has exceptional event facilities such as the University Union, the Alumni Center, the Julia Morgan House (in midtown), the Aquatic Center (on Lake Natoma), and the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex. We are known for high-quality events, forums, and exhibits—the U.S. Olympic Trials, the Russian National Orchestra, the 2003 Gubernatorial Debate, the Chinese New Year Celebration, and many others. These are complemented by frequent art, theatre and music programs, NCAA Division I sporting events and championships, and public lectures and forums on national, state and local topics. We will continue to host on-campus events and programs that add significantly to the cultural environment of the Sacramento Region.

Goals:

  • Expand our capacity to host major events.
  • Increase awareness of and interest in campus events among the campus community.

PROGRESS

Offering public-friendly campus retailing

As Sacramento State increases its role as a cultural resource for the region, it will become more attractive to alumni and the general public as a place to spend time, dine and purchase University-related merchandise.

Goal:

  • Develop attractive food and merchandise facilities.
